Wallpaper makers...listen up....

In the past two days just over 100 walls were submitted for approval.  It's taken just over one hour to access each and post comment, with a few for immediate rejection there are now 99 pending.

Wouldn't be quite so bad if just one single person hadn't submitted about 50 of them on his own.....I've never seen so many permutations of the same old Bryce....pick a colour and he's upped it.

Some people wonder what happens in the mysterious world of submission moderation, well generally several admins will each devote time to assess each submission and formulate an opinion....until there is sufficient concensus of opinion to determine their 'fate'.

Some hit the floor from obvious transgression/s....but then others will bite the dust simply because there are just so many the same that it's downright repetitively boring.

Of those 50 I expect maybe 10 will make it.

Heck....there's 16.7 million different colours....why didn't he just up them all?  I've got nothing better to do.....who 'needs' a life, anyway?....

ah, c'mon people, what das jafo know about making wallpapers j/k

You know, sadly it's good that Jafo and other moderators are subjected to thousands of walls. When you see a few, most of them look good. When you see tons, some start to blend together and some start to stand out. Thus being able to see the crap, the ho hum ones, and the good ones, makes Jafo and the rest all that more efficient at it.

im not sayin a thing.......oww my tongue hurts so baddddd...

Yeah Jafo, I can see that you must see a torrent of wallpapers!

I do wish that winCustomize would consider a photo-wallpaper category though. Many people I think, use a customized browser from Stardock that just leaves a cool, hip, timely, political, lovely, wallpaper up as a screensaver, like a personal statement, whenever they walk away from their computer.

And for sure you all would get a bazillion submissions, and then someone would have to edit (like you are doing!), but I bet there would be some gems!

I can see it now. Might as well turn our name into webshots version 2.com

Photos as walls adds a whole new dimension to the issue of 'exactly whose is it?', as too many people would be inclined to find-a-groovy-photo-and-up-it-like-wow...and to heck with who actually took it.

There have been several submitted that were of questionable origin [as with other forms of wall], but it'd certainly add to the workload to attempt to verify photographs' origins as well...

Now I ask........
Are you referring to my wall? Just wondering, because I did mention that I had taken a photo of a greenman. Now, I know it's not the most complicated of walls. I actually prefer simple walls, because I find most of the scenery ones, or the scifi ones, though really well done, to clutter my desktop. But, I do like a 3D effect, so balancing an uncluttered desktop with that 3D can be tough. I also know that many of you wouldn't like my wall, though I'd like to think that maybe someone would. I dunno. I am not really fond of tongue biting. I like honesty. Maybe one of my faults.
And, to be honest, I was surprised at how fast my wall was accepted, so I was flattered. Still am, actually.

Dabe (feeling a bit paranoid.....)

I don't think he is referring to your wall. The problem comes with having a lot of photos. One can never be sure if the uploader took it or not unless he supplies the negative. And if it is a digital camera, who knows.

There are literally millions of photos on the web, so it wouldn't be hard to get away with it.

Thanks, Travis. I do see what you mean. Actually, I also have a pbase website where I display my photos, as photography is one of my passions. And, I'm always afraid that my photos will be "lifted" by some mindless, inconsiderate dolt. But, I display them anyway because it's the artist in me that wishes to display my art. Also, it's a piece of my life, and I like to share that with some people, even though a particular photo may not be technically that good.

As far as my very first upload, my greenman wallpaper, it's certainly not one of my best digital images, not by a long shot. But, it's a wall, nonetheless, and I'm actually using it right now. Hey, if you're gonna start skinning, ya gotta start somewhere. Walls are as simple as it gets.

You put your photo's on PBase and worry that they're gonna be used? It IS a stock photography site isn't it?
No, it's technically not. Technically, if you read the fine print, the images belong and are copyrighted to the photographer. Nothing stock about it. At least, that's the intent. But, there are people who lift photos. And, if you think it's a stock photo site, then likely many millions also think the same thing. Maybe I should have a "converstation" with the site adiministrator to make sure that it should be KNOWN up front, and not just in the fine print.

I think if it's not a stock photo site, then people should be more wary of putting up such large high quality pictures. I don't know of anyone thats used it in buiseness or otherwise, but I know plenty of students that told me about it and use it quite often.
However of course students are allowed to as the laws of copyright are lifted from them in their school work.

I just went to the site. It is stated on the front page, but down at the bottom. If you don't scroll down, you don't see the message, "All images are copyright of their owners." I am aware that it is risky to put up my photos, and for that reason, some of my photos will never go up there. But, as I said, I like to share, so I take the risk. I still hate it when people lift photos. And, the thought of using stolen work to create and submit wallpapers is abhorrent. If there was only a way to filter those shitheads out.........

you could always add little things so you can prove that the image is yours. write your name in a place that nobody can tell unless you show it to them. watermarks. just something that with you can prove ownership and still keep the photo looking good.

dabe....generally if I'm being specific ...responding to a single person I'll make it plain by prefixing with the person's name.....[just like now]...

As for 'filtering sh**heads'....that's generally the Admins' problem, along with everyone's assistance where possible...

Jafo, I apologize for the profanity. I was looking to make a rather harsh statement to those photo thieves who may have been reading this. I guess I got carried away. I promise to be more judicious with my language next time.

Win Customise should have a page of clear instruction, maybe even a valuation period, say 2 weeks.

Some sort of star rating so you can fast track those artists who spend hours and hours making images up that you know are good and there work is genuine.

Also it is not always clear to us what you have too much of and what you might be looking for. All these space aged funky images are ok but what about simple scenery or nature. We can`t see all the images in the library so you could maybe post a most wanted image thing for us to follow ?

Only a thought....

Very good comment, thanks for the feed back !

For the most part, WC has those things.
The rating system does a fair job on keeping tabs on the most popular skins/designs.
The search by category is also a big help when searching for skins.
Top Authors and Top Downloads tells you pretty much what’s popular.
There can never be "too much' of things here since every artist's imagination and ideas varies with each design, the thing is that only the most appealing designs will be displayed.
The work submitted is a voluntary action by each author. There are a few requests here and there, but it's up to the artist to take up a request or simply continue to create work of his/her own.

The primary concern is that a wall, or images incorporated in a wall are the property of the person submitting them, and not someone simply re-uploading something he thinks is neat that he found elsewhere.

Just recently another site was displaying 'Digital Frost' by 'God knows who' [someone] but definitely not Tierne who is its author.  Some walls/images are just too damn obvious and well known for anyone to ever get away with that for long.  Google found me 'Digital Frost' in an instant and verified its origin...[I wasn't going to rely on memory so was just being absolutely certain]...
