Visibility of Gas Clouds While Exploring

As I was exploring with a Probe, I came upon a Gas Cloud. What seemed strange is that as soon as I saw an edge of the Gas Cloud, the whole Gas Cloud became visible as shown in the screen snapshot below. Is that the intended behavior? I would think that I should only see what is in the cells that I have explored (the cells I have explored are outlined, the ones I have not are not).

I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but I'll bring it up in case it's a bug because it definitely feels off.
