New WC poll on new library next month

New WC poll on new library next month

I just noticed that WC is planning to add a new library next month. Some of the poll's choices for user input aren't surprising: Rainlendar, Trillian and even boot screens.

But there is also the option IE/Explorer Toolbar Icon Sets. Does anyone at WC/SD know if this is a reference to a specific app? Like Y'z Toolbar? Or something else? (I think I recall SD previously mentioned revamping WebBlinds but at present WebBlinds only changes the IE toolbar icons. So this also caused me to wonder if there are any plans for a new WebBlinds type app on SD's "to do" list or just it's just not on at all for the near future.)

Most common abuse of stats is those 'phone in' polls that TV shows have......they show something controversial...then ask yes or no....and depending on how inflamatory the topic depends on how incensed one side will be to comment, whereas the other sits back happy with the status-quo and sees no need to respond....thus the 'opinion' appears to be a landslide when in fact it is merely a bunch of people feeling agravated or prodded into comment....

Would be better if they asked Q's like 'are you still beating your wife?' and really confuse the sheep...

You know those survey the political parties make. I got called once. I couldn't believe the questions.  Translated in a US context it could be something like:
Q: Are you going to vote for or against George W. Bush in the upcoming elections?
A: For.

Q: OK. Now, would you still vote for Mr Bush even though he is doing a terrible job as a President, increased the national debt by 5 billion dollars and unemployment increased by 6% under his mandate, laeding the country to the lower employment rate since the great depression?
A: Err... I guess not.

Q: So your answer is no?
A: Hum, ok, my answer is no if it's how you asid it was.

Q: Thank you for your time, sir.
(as she adds one vote against Bush to her survey)

True story (in a Quebec context). Never believe surveys made by political parties!!

Abuse in statistics usually involves selective use of absolute numbers vs. percentage.

Example: "This is the biggest ever..." things that grow over time will always be bigger in absolute numbers ("biggest tax increase ever"). When often times a percentage is more appropriate.

As for the poll results -- You can't just take out the boot screen votes and pretend the others would have remained roughly equal. Those boot screen voters would have likely voted for something else and I suspect by and large they would not have voted for Rainlendar but rather IE toolbars or "Somethign else". Whereas specific apps like Trillian and Rainlendar have specific constituencies.

Which brings us right back to the beginning: I think Rainlendar is a good program. But I don't think it has yet reached the level of popularity to earn a section.  But hopefully, in time, it will continue to gain popularity and at that point it will have a section.

From WC's point of view, the point of a section is to attract new people to WinCustomize. That is the #1 criteria.

OK, how about Trillian then? I think Trillian has the potential to attract new people.

I must admit that with Desktop X 2, you can get a pretty decent calendar, making Rainlendar less essential. But Trillian just has no equivalent.
