Custom menu background is not working if I use Curtains theme.

Or, Curtains theme should also be applied to Windows 10 and 11 style menu.

I'm using Windows 10 Home 21H1, Start 11 0.90 and Curtains 1.19.

I have the "alternating menu" bug as well (the one posted by nighteyes); I noticed it only happens when sitting on the desktop with nothing open; if an application is open, Start11 comes up consistently and the bug doesn't occur. Here's a video:

Additional things I noticed:

-The Start11 menu doesn't seem to animate smoothly sometimes on a 144hz monitor; Sometimes it will be as smooth as the default start menu, other times it seems to run at a reduced framerate

-The app list doesn't not smooth scroll like the Windows 10 start menu

And a small feature/improvement request:

-The app tile grid in Windows 10 style mode is 3 blocks wide and there's no option for 4 blocks like in Windows 10 ("Show additional tiles in the Start Menu" in the W10 settings) (example below) 4 Tile Width

End of VindicatorFG1's quote

The 4 blocks mode should be an option in a future update.

The scrolling may depend on your mouse.  Some mice send wheel messages as a multiple of lines, others do smooth scrolling.  We may have to tweak things to smooth out the input for the less smooth mice.

The menu animation should run at about 120hz which would potentially create some stuttering at 144hz as it isn't a nice multiple.  I will see what we can do about that.

But, changing "Offset menu from the taskbar" to "Always" gives this themed menu.

(It occasionally becomes unthemed but change to "Never" and open the menu then change back to "Always" gives that again)

Hi,
All .lnk shortcuts appear normally, but .url links do not appear in programs list. This means all shortcuts for Steam games and Ubisoft Connect games are not accessible while the menu is active. Great app, early days, glad you guys are on the ball.

Sholto

I tried your way to reproduce the bug and i get the exact same result. Seems your way is an easier way to reproduce it, should be easy to debug and fix hopefully.

It seems this is related to the start button image, if left to the default image, it will have this bug where it alternates. If replacing image with custom it will not have the alternating bug. Might have to do with how start11 intercepts that click and function call?

Quoting Neil Banfield,

Quoting ulknar,

I'm really liking how Start 11 works, but there may be a small function that either doesn't work properly, or I am an idiot and can't figure it out. In Windows 10 you can pin a file to an associated application in the start menu. Ex. right click on microsoft word, see a list of pinned documents that can be opened with microsoft word, Windows 11 default start menu lacks this function. I used the in place upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 and upon installing Start 11. I can see and open the files I've previously pinned (on windows 10) but I can't find any way to pin new ones.

It should be the same as on Windows 10.  Right click on the app and the jumplist should show.  You can make documents from the recent list become pinned by clicking on the pin icon on the right hand side.

File explorer (as it appears pinned to start 11 menu) has a recent list that does allow me to pin things, microsoft word, notepad, paint, nothing else even has a recent list.

End of ulknar's quote

I've found the solution and cause of my issue. Before the RC of Start 11 came out, while using Windows 11's default start menu I disabled the recent files from the recommended section of the default start menu, not noticing it specifically ties into jump list. Doing this breaks the ability for the jumplist to load on start 11. I'm sorry for being a bother and not noticing this before incorrectly reporting it as an issue.

I just checked Start11 based on setting the menu etc. centered. I'm on a 32" 4k 16x9 and I measured (with a ruler) the dead center. The start menu is to the left of dead center. As to be expected, rather than centered to the horizontal plane. The icons in the taskbar are centered to the horizontal plane as well. I have checked the setting on three machines (different screens) and the results are the same.

Weirdly for me, it's not working.

Is your OS Windows 11 or Windows 10?

If I'm correct am using the same Curtain "Arrow" as yours. But I don't see the Windows 11 menu like yours.

I installed it from the "Online" tab in "Curtains" but still my Start Menu is nowhere like what is yours!

Edit: I just tried the option and yes now am able to see the menu as expected, guess this is a bug.

FOR ANYONE HAVING THESE ISSUES:

This is caused because of the way Start11 Intercepts the start button click (on the default one), currently the fix I have is:

- In Start11 settings disable "Position the start button in the centre of the taskbar".
- Then for the start button, enable "Use a custom start button image".
- Select one you like "Pick image...".
- IF you want to use the DEFAULT WINDOWS start button like i do, I made a custom start button image you can download below that looks just the same.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/eq0b79reibz09qo/Windows_11_Default_Start_Button.zip/file

It comes with the .PSD file so you can modify it aswell

And Start11 devs you can provide this one as a choice too

This fixes the alternating start11 menu with default windows menu and fixes the mouse being flung all over the place when clicking the button and moving it quickly right after.

Just bought Object Desktop, Start11 definitely has issues with arranging the icons in the start11 start menu. I can't really arrange the icons where I want them, I move one icon and another one from somewhere else  jump to top left and ruins my arrangement, other icons also move. I eventually gave up arranging the icons.

Two major issues for me:

  • Looking up any UWP app (I think it only occurs on UWP apps) gives two entries. The first one just gives an error, I always have to select the latter, as seen here:

  • As mentioned by someone else before, the start menu doesn't respect the monitor's refresh rate. I'm on a 240Hz monitor and the Start11 menu feels like it pops up in 60Hz. I disabled the animation for now as a workaround but it bothers me.
  • The list of programs appears like half a second after opening the menu over and over again. Probably a minor thing but I noticed that.

I'm currently on Build 22000.194. Windows 11 Pro.

Best regards,

Which menu style are you using?

Also that seems to be old search mode you are using?  Does new search mode produce the same two results issue?

The menu animates in at 120Hz, but thats still half your 240Hz screen, so we may need to tweak that.

Windows 11 Style Start Menu only (have not looked at the other styles):

o Center Start Button - The Windows 11 Style is completely unusable with it centered. The MS Windows 11 start menu will pop up from time to time and when it does you can slowly double click on the start button and it will alternate between the MS menu and the Start11 menu. If the Start11 windows menu is working and you restart Explorer then the MS start menu will become the default. Seems to not be a problem with it Left aligned.

o Rearranging Icons - When dragging icons to the position you want them other icons move around. Arranging them is impossible and I finally gave up trying.

o Shortcut List - Reordering the list does not work. Does not show up on the Start menu as reordered and when go back into the settings the list is reset to the original order.

o Icons disappearing - Seems that when you get up to a certain amount of Icons in the Windows 11 style (no mater how big you have made the start menu) that if you add another icon it replaces the first icon in the grid. I added 2 icons (right clicking on shortcuts and add to star11 menu) and then noticed that the Windows Menu and Onenote icons were missing. These were icons 1 & 2 in the grid.

o Taskbar Windows 10 style menu - Menu only pops up when you right click on the main monitor and not on the 2nd monitor.

o Start Menu Closes - The menu closes after you click on it if you move your mouse to quickly. You have to pause before moving the mouse to the start menu.

o Double Popup - Occasionally when right clicking on the taskbar I will get two pop ups. Never saw this before Start11.

o Recently installed list persists - This list continues to show a list of apps even though I have turned it off in Windows 11 and in the Win11 start menu the list is now gone.

o Crashed - Opened up Start 11, clicked on All Apps, started to scroll down, and app hung. Had to restart explorer.

o Win-X menu only popping up on Main monitor - on a dual monitor system when right clicking on the start button on the 2nd monitor the Win-X menu pops up on the Main monitor instead. Could be a Win11 issue as this also happens when I turn off Start11 menu and the start menu is on the Left vs the Center.

Many times(over 50% of the time) when clicking on the Start button, the menu will be offset to the left.  Clicking again will eventually make it reappear centered(It can takes over 20 retries sometimes)

Could you be more specific as to the issues you are having?

This is a pre release version which should get an update next week so the more information you can provide the better odds of any issue you are having being resolved.

I've noticed with this latest build that when you click the Start icon it will occasionally launch the native Windows Start menu instead

Happening on both my PC and laptop. Only occurred since updating to RC1. V0.55 was fine.

Both machines running W11 21H2 22000.194

Hi,
    1. When I right click an item in the Windows 10 Start Menu iteration, the highlight stays on that item even if I cancel the right click and move elsewhere in the menu, it should disappear if a right click is cancelled.

    2. Program shortcuts starting with a symbol ex. µTorrent are added at the bottom of the menu and grouped by each symbol. In Windows 10 they were all together under the letter category of '&' above 'A'.

    3. Items in the menu that have 'New' marked underneath refuse to remove the 'New' mark. In Windows 10 any kind of click on them was enough to remove the 'New' marking.

    4. Only program shortcuts appear in the menu. Where are all my Steam game shortcuts?

Thanks.

This may be related to the .URL bug others have mentioned but on the Win11 and Win10 Menu Styles, shortcuts automatically created by Windows for graphical WSL apps (WSLg) cannot be opened and have no icon. On Window 7 and Modern styles these shortcuts do have icons and open fine.

Please add possibility to use compact start menu in Windows 10 style (selection "Display app list in Start menu"):
