Fun with Pooters....

Fun with Pooters....

I have seven of the mongrels...

This one [I'm using] is the 'prime' one...P111/500 - 1 gig ram....needs upgrading so GrandPrix 4 can run properly....but otherwise only loses my email to remind me it's a Pooter and don't forget it.

My wife's one...P11/333 - 256 meg ram....likes to BSOD in XP [and 98]....issues with the NT4 driver for the GeForce 2 card....no-go for games.

Fiddling one...P200 - 256 meg ram ....locks up in 2K....even the 3D screensavers...eg 3D text....again I'm betting issues with the Vid Driver....Diamond Viper 770 card...again no luck with 3D.

OK one...P233 64 meg ram....seems fine...happy with 98 s/e but then it's an 4 meg PCI card, not an AGP pain in the bum.

Junk ones...

486DX4/100 Win 98s/e

486DX2/50...laptop - OK for Win 95 [no CD-rom]

486SX2/33 - makes a good bookend.

Ultimately the hand-me-down process will happen when I upgrade to a P4 board, CPU and appropriate ram.  Essentially I'll be shuffling components down the food-chain...and the bottom-dwellers will shuffle off this mortal coil.

Latest frustration is downloading DirectX 9 and burning that [and other bits] to install by CD to the P200 and its drive refuses to see the disk...[the other Pooters aren't so fussy...they can see it].

Don't ya just love 'em?....

Ugh....somehow my Bios settings decided to change...and no IRQ was being provided for the card....don't ask me how or why....but I got the SOB working.....eventually...

cool!

Plug and Pray was in full swing back with those setups

I always loved it when you would pop in a card and it would not take the
static resources the card comes with and would apply it's own odd ball
settings to it..

You plug in say a USR modem and instead of Com3 irq4 it changes it to Com4 Irq9
and then won't let you change the settings inside control/system so you had to
go back into the bios and change the auto irq for the slot to disable and or
change the jumpers on the modem or run the config software

NT4 and 2000 were really crappy about that too, oh and SCSI cards also...

I had that problem a lot on NIC's using the Realtek chips. Invariably the BIOS would assign an IRQ of say 10 to the card (which was right for that card) and Win98 would try to give it 11 or 5 or anything but 10! Very frustrating!

Bells finally rang when I noticed on boot that the IRQ allocation for 'Graphic card' was 'N/A'.....thunk to myself....."that's not kewl.....gotta be iffy"....sure enough it was.....rebooted and lo and behold the yellow exclamation mark was missing from the Device Manager.

So what if it took me two complete Win98 installs to discover it?

May be slow...but not 'entirely' stoopid...

You beat it and won and that is what counts in the end

I am very surprised that Jafo posted this thread. Maybe some one has hi-jacked his account?

Well, all I hope is that while 'Jafo' is playing with pooters is that he is wearing protection.

ahhh, welll, if it's that kind of pooter you thinking of Joe, rubbers are not needed

Joe....'pooter' is a subtle dig at the American accent that tends to make 'pewter' come out as 'pootah'....

Accent? I don't have any accent

Y'all got me mixed up

Wife's comp continues to be snobbish....doesn't want to play with me...

When the OpenGL Win98 screensavers can crash your system you know something's wrong....and the latest Asus 7100 drivers didn't help.....loads to black screen and 'dos' cursor....then you have to Vulcan Mind-claw to get going again.

Will have to go back to an older driver....

Vulcan Mind-claw? Tell me about it, I'm all ears...

Do you mean Mind-meld?

I love the 3 finger salute..It hjust reminds me how crappy 98 is...I never have to give xp the 3 finger..Seems fairly stable compared to all other Microsoft OS...You just have to feed it plenty of good ram...Was haven troubles with only 256 on XP..Put in a stick of 2100 266MHz for atotal of768mrgs ddr and no more problems...
Ah...but this P11/333 has 'issues' with the vid card in both 98se AND XP....so I can't rule out a hidden hardware conflict...... /me looks at mouse as culprit.....bloody rodents...

I updated my GForce 2 MX to the 2-4MX driver on my older system and it worked ok after that Jafo. Dunno if it might help in your situation or not.

I also ran the AMD patch for the AGP and it also did help on another system.

Again I do not know if that will help or not..

Oh, and I also had to figure out which ROM area was being shadowed/cached and disable that specific regions on another system. I think it was the second from the top in the Shadow setup of the BIOS...

I found a OS that is way more stable. Actually I found 2. Linux and OS X.

But all things considered I dislike 98. Laptop can not handle XP.

Well....life goes on.....comps come and go....

The olde box, the Lian Li aluminium case now sports some fine new additions.

P4 3.0 gig 800fsb CPU

ASUS P800P Deluxe MoBo

2 sticks of 512 PC3200 400 DDR

A nice new Lite-On 52-32-52 burner....[gone is the 4speed]

Norton AV2004 [though that is spitting dummies at the moment]

One drive is being a bit 'fussy'....locking the system on virus-scan or defrag.....squeals like a pig.....so I'll have to replace it soon.

New MoBo can read the entire 160gig drive that the oldie could only be tricked to see 128.

Playing with a fixed-frequency Monitor....20", but cannot display post or boot....nothing's visible till logon.....meant I had to switch over to an old 14" for booting/bios changes.

Still a few more bits to add....hardware/software....but it's all 'fun'.....

IMHO I repeat IMHO you wasted alot of dough.

Could got a better prebuilt system or used AMD.

Again IMHO!
