Hibernate option not showing in Start10

Hibernate option not showing in Start10

I just purchased and installed Start10 on a laptop with the Win 10 1909 build. Start10 version is 1.8.

I went into the power options in my pc to enable the hibernate option to show on the standard Windows 10 menu. But Start10 does not reflect this change, and only shows restart, sleep, etc. If I change the setting in Windows to show sleep (or not), that is reflected in Start10, but the setting to display the hibernate option is not reflected in Start10.

I am very disappointed in Stardock!  I have recommended START8 and START10 to many, many people and I've been in the business a very long time.  I also use Multiplicity.  I have never hesitated to install your updates because they always performed without problem giving me confidence that you thoroughly tested software prior to release.

I   STRONGLY  suggest you make available a standard update that will install as normal!  Through this blog I finally got Hibernate to work on my test system after a couple hours of wasted time!  Inexperienced users would have a difficult time following what needs to be done.

I'll leave my production system as is until you release a normal update that includes the fix.  Hibernate is not a frivolous feature for me.  I use it everyday.

Restore my confidence in Stardock.  Do the right thing!  Release a standard update (1.81 or whatever you want to call it) so that the standard START10 "check for update" installs a fully operational START10.

What problem did you have exactly?

Start10 will show hibernate IF you have set in the OS to show.  This is to maintain consistency with the default OS menu.

Earlier versions of Start10 had a bug which misread the settings and always showed hibernate when no setting was set.

The initial 1.8 was not showing it at all but this was addressed in an update to it.  I can only apologise for this slipping past QA but we rectified it very quickly upon discovery.  All current downloads of 1.8 will contain this fix.

I would imagine we will have a 1.81 soon as I think there are some additional translation tweaks to come.  The update checker will flag about this.

I installed the initial version before the bug was fixed. I've been hibernating this PC for years so there is no question that it was set to show in Windows  I'm now hibernating using the Windows 10 menu on this PC.

I observed on this forum that others were having the same problem, e.g. hibernate not an option through Shutdown, and that a fix was in the works. I believed I could go through the normal Start10 update process when the fix was made, i.e. open START10, click "About," then click "Check for update." The response, "No updates for Start10 have been found." I just tried again on this PC running the initial version of 1.8 and get the same results and still do not have hibernate showing.  Suggesting a download that had issues as documented in the forum and I also experienced, was not a good idea.

From your reply it appears the updated module is now on-line so that when a "check for update" or Start10 automated check is performed, the "fixed" version is installed.  It seems all that had to be done to avoid this frustration was to change the on-line version number or set a forced update so the normal update process would occur.  I did not have the issues of others that hibernate was not enabled.

I was in the software business for many years and had I taken your route, I'd probably be looking for a job.  When something was broke, we were expected to fix it and make it easy for users to apply that fix.

Perhaps I set my expectations for Stardock too high.  This may seem to be a trivial problem but when it is a function I use and need, it is not trivial.  And when it is a company I have relied on and trusted for nearly seven years, those attributes erode.

Stardock - I followed your instructions as so.

1. Uninstall StarDock10

2. Reboot

3. Purge

4. Reboot

3. Install v1.8

4. Reboot

No Hibernate option!!

What I had to do in addition was to go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\System Settings and switch the hibernate option back on too, not forgetting to hit save too. See https://winaero.com/blog/add-hibernate-to-the-start-menu-in-windows-10/

Thanks for wasting an hour of my time fixing your mistake.

I am sorry to hear that.

The second set of steps is not due to a mistake.  Hibernate was always only supposed to show if you had the option in the OS set to show it.  The OS default is to not.

Older start10 versions incorrectly showed it if the user had never changed settings.

The bug was the very first 1.8 release always hid it.

Start10 now correctly mirrors what the Windows 10 menu shows.

Thanks for the reply Neil. I put Stardock on my machine a long long time ago, and so Hibernate may well have been switched off in the OS for a long time too.
