Across one or more monitors, DeskScapes provides you with the capability to animate and customize the background on your Windows desktops using static or animated backgrounds that are already provided, or your personal WMV image files. You can also add over 60 unique effects and recolor your backgrounds.

DeskScapes animated backgrounds are saved as .Dream files and are easy to package using DreamMaker, which is included with DeskScapes. Dreams can also be applied as screensavers.

basj, thanks.  No where on the website does it say you need to pay for Deskscape if you already paid for it.  Couldn't find anything that says what you just told me.  Every other website I buy online software (pretty much every software now, even Windows) has a message, i.e. "If you already own XXX please click here" and it tells you what to do.  Sometimes you get the software for free, sometimes a discount, sometimes there is an explanation like you gave above. But nothing on the Stardock website. 

Also, in the FAQ questions it says when you buy a product it is a one-time purchase.  So the FAQ is so completely misleading it borders on a lie.  Since the program is updated approx once a year,  in reality you are paying additional money about once a year.  Stardock needs to update the FAQ to reflect that.   I know this isn't your fault since you don't work for Stardock but they need a little more clarity on this issue.

DeskScapes does not have a major new release every year.  DeskScapes 8 was released in 2013 and DeskScapes 10 in 2019, that's 6 years between major releases.

Your purchase is a one time purchase of the version you purchased, so if you purchased DeskScapes 8 you got 8, 8.1, 8.5 etc at no cost and you can continue to use those.  If you want to move to v10 then that has a cost, but it does not stop you using 8.x on the OSes it was designed for.
