and a rip report

in a recent thread i had to read the following: "moshi Where is this LCARS interface then? Oh yeah it fictional, and only exists on a tv show! At least i've made it reality or closer than eney one else has! You try and make a theme that complex."

i was pretty surprised as all the images in this theme looked very familiar. a few years ago i was really interested in emulating the LCARS interface and i have seen all of those before...

as the use of trademarked logos is allowed at Wincustomize (the guidelines speak of "theoretical copyrights" - whatever that may be) we should not discuss about those, but rather about the ordinary theft we all can agree about.

i am speaking about this theme: https://www.wincustomize.com/window.asp?Cmd=COMMENTS&Lib=3&SkinID=2445

download it and have a look at mainback 2.BMP

it contains a resized, cut and pasted rip of this image: http://www.lcarscom.net/images/galaxy.jpg at lcarscom.net. even the link is still there, but resized to be unreadable.

personally i think that nothing that is more complicated than black text on a uni-colored background and vice versa was created by the skinner. but it is not my job to search every single rip in this theme. one is already one too much, right?

in the same image there is even a mention of lcarscom.net in the text. pretty obvious, eh?

Not to the untrained eye

hehe, you should consider glasses then

on the right part of mainback 2.bmp

(no shouting intended, but it´s all caps on the stolen image):

ACCESS GRANTED

LCARSCOM.NET LIBRARY COMPUTER ACCESS AND RETREIVAL
SYSTEM OPTICAL DATA NETWORK STATUS

stolen from this image: http://www.lcarscom.net/images/lcn.gif

two rips in in one image. not bad. if i would look a little more, i´m sure i also find the original of the image at the top.

its not your domain, but not his.

how do you know he didn't get permission?
make sure all the facts are straight before you jump the gun
Reply #5 Top
because there are neither permissions nor credits in the comments or the downloadable file.

the same as in the logon by the same skinner here: https://www.wincustomize.com/window.asp?Cmd=COMMENTS&Lib=26&SkinID=977

cut and pasted together from these two images:
http://www.lcarscom.net/images/planets_still.gif (text and numbers on the top)
http://www.lcarscom.net/images/okuda4.jpg (the blue part on the left)

well then go e-mail the admin of the lcarscom.net website and complain to him, his work, he'll take action
Reply #7 Top
so you think rips should stay up until the creator finds them? not really, it´s in the interest of the whole skinning community that stealing is not tolerated.

Very true, get it down the sooner the better.

i do beleive people who origionally made the images were contacted in relation to if they were indeed rips.

i don't think you got that point.

and as far as your statement of making "the best" LCARS theme... where is it?

OK...it's 25 to 3 in the morning, Saturday...and I'm off to the land of nod...but a few of these themes/works have been removed pending appropriate consent/s, etc...

doomgaze: where the heck did i say i made the best LCARS theme? it´s the mentioned skinner that permanently bigs himself up while using other peoples graphics.
if you want to see a little of my skins/themes check Skinbase.org (a little more than 100 of them) http://www.skinbase.org/gallery.php?uname=moshi

Doomgaze... even if they were contacted, the permission text isn't there, or is lcars.net even mentioned.

I had wanted to release a HoverDesk LCARS theme, but  never received any response from lcars.net or Paramont. I have my doubts that Solley did either.

The theme has been pulled pending appropriate consent/s.........

Adam's Lcar's theme is very unique and quite interesting. I use it myself cause i enjoy the feel and complexity of it. I've checked sooo many different Star Trek sites out there and none come close to how well his came out.

I just find it pretty sad accusing a guy for his hard work over images that is posted on many different Star Trek Sites. I would love to know how you are so sure that the image from Lcars.com and the one Adam used are exactly the same? Which episode did those images come from? Was it episode 12 Season 5 or 6 or 7 from Star Trek New Generations or was it episode 9 from Star Trek Voyager season 3 or 2? I know i've seen that image several times on many episodes.

Finding your own personal unique hard work stolen is one thing, but drawing at straws on one of the most popular sci-fi shows is pretty sad.

Do all these Star Trek sites show us they have written permission from Roddenbury and/or the right holders for each of the movies/tv shows that give all the websites permission to hand out thier images as if they own them? I doubt it. Some may have. But majority do not. Based on this assumption then every image on wincustomize taken of a actor/actress, image from a movie or a tv show should be removed unless they have written permission from said actor, movie and tv show rights holders to every website that has a copy of those images.

moshi I think you are a very sad individual, with nothing better to do with you life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a Rip, I been on the links that you have posted, and the images are not the same. Of coarse there will be similarities as the LCARS images on the LCARS Com.net are based on the Real LCARS interface. I wonder if all of the websites and themes here on wincustomize have got permission from star trek? I very much doubt it! BTW I have seen images very similar to those you are talking about all over the Internet, they are different but similar as LCARS has a very distinct look if created properly!

moshi are you going to go and grass everyone who has emulated Apple graphics or maybe matrix, hmmm?

I don’t know whether you have actually bothered to download this theme, as if you had, you would have realised that it is the most complexly structured theme ever, and is an amazing piece of engineering and it’s more than a simple collection of graphics. The whole way you have gone about this is a PERSONAL ATTACT on Adam and should be reported.

Jafo are you listening!

Me and other fans of this amazing theme will not stand by and watch someone sad like you destroy a truly unique piece of work. Very angry!

the fact is that he did use images from that website in his skins, links are provided in this post. And Paramount, or the website could sue Wincustomize over it. Stealing of images, should never be tolerated in any way shape or fashion at this site.

Johnct the only personal attack that has been made is from you to moshi, images have been used with no permission is all he was saying so please do not assume he is sad because he pointed it out.

Get over it.

Until the author responds, this is all rather pointless.

Oh I see but it's ok to have apple graphics here, all make sense now

Any what’s wrong with using source graphics everyone does it!

I don't...

Me either.

Urlryn - did you check out the links and the image moshi pointed to? I have, and the lcars.net image when resized to fit Adam's mainback2 image, lines up perfectly. The distorted link text lines up too. No one is saying Adam didn't work hard on the theme, but he MUST have written permission to use this image.  The fact that this one image was 'borrowed', makes all the images seem suspect.

Do all these Star Trek sites show us they have written permission from Roddenbury and/or the right holders for each of the movies/tv shows that give all the websites permission to hand out thier images as if they own them? I doubt it.

I doubt it too, but we don't control those sites.

Besides, short of a mystical experience or a seance, I don't think Roddenbury is in any condition to give his permission.

My thinking is that when a graphic used in a work actually has the original site's link within said graphic it really would be wise to actually seek and obtain permission from that site to use that graphic.

If I were to use an image in a LS theme that had 'Lcars.net' on it I'd be assuming the image was probably made by or for that site and therefore they would need contacting for permission for its use.

Since this image of concern exists on another's site and is therefore not the property of the person who submitted it here [irrespective of how complex or altered the resulting work might be], and there is no accompanying 'permission.txt' covering its use, the work must needs be removed from public access pending appropriate correction/s.

It is generally a simple process to seek and obtain suitable consent/s to make use of another's images/content....people do it every day.  Some, unfortunately [like myself] are stuck permanently in stasis waiting for approval because a person may be difficult to contact...I'm still twiddling thumbs 6 months later, but there is no way I'll be side-stepping the consent issue.

I expect this particular 'issue' will be resolved.....[but I'd like to think it does NOT merely be displaced to an alternate skin site where standards may be more 'lax']...
