Start 10 Explorer.exe Fault Win10 Creators

RE: Windows 10 Creators v.1703 Build 15063.540
Start10 v. 1.56 Registered User
Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.15063.447

BUG:
When repeatedly moving, copying or pasting files on the desktop, explorer.exe crashes.   It can be replicated quickly by doing the following:  Create a folder on the desktop and open it.  Select some items on the desktop and right click and select CUT.  Now paste into the new open folder.  Finally, Right Click and select "Undo Move" and then select "Redo Move".  Repeat Undo and Redo a couple of times and explorer.exe will fault.

Easier way to replicate issue:  Unzip an archive with many files.  Explorer Faults.

This issue stops when Start10 is uninstalled.

I submitted the issue to Microsoft and they analyzed my user dump files for explorer.exe. They found that Start10 may the cause. Please see below. Thank You!

I had a quick look at the dmp files and Start10 is not on the call stack for either of the crashes.  This means that the crash is unlikely to be directly caused by Start10.  It could be exposing a bug in something else, but if it is nowhere on the stack for a crash then it isn't probable that it caused it.

The MS MVP who replied appears to have simply noticed two files show warnings and errors in the dmp file because no symbols are found which is normal.  Only Microsoft dlls and exes and any you create yourself would have debug symbols accessible on a computer.  This is not the reason for a crash and they should have known that.  Likewise the nvidia driver is highly unlikely to be involved in a crash inside the windows.storage.dll!

The person who replied to you does not actually work for Microsoft.  MVP and MCC are awards given for contributions to the community.  Employees usually have MSFT in their titles.

Did the problem actually go away after removing Start10?

I've done my best to analyze my user dump files and ProcessMonitor logs.  It  looks like Start10 to me.

Several of my computers have the same issue.  The person's taskbar is just a black bar.  No start button, no tray icons, etc.  As soon as I remove Start10 and reboot, the computer is fine, and no call backs.  The OP crash report shows Nvidia video drivers.  My computers only have Intel video, so I doubt it's video drivers, unless Start10 is using some new feature of Creators Update.

We, in support, have not had any reports of note on this issue.

I would like you to try (on one of the PCs in question), if a full purge / reboot / reinstall resolves it.

The following tool will purge the application for a possible re-install.

**IMPORTANT** Please save any open documents/work and close out all of your applications including browsers. Your PC may restart after running this .bat file.

Please follow this link:

http://sd.stardock.com/zubaz/apps/Purge_StartALL.bat

Save the file to your desktop, right click it and select "Run as Administrator" if you're on Vista/7/8/8.1/10

http://screencast.com/t/Zv5LzdG8W8

You may be notified that Windows is protecting your PC.  Select "More info" and then "Run anyway".

Reboot the computer and reinstall the application.  Note: It is important to get the most recent version of the application.  For getting your product and key, please see the following:

https://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Please DO NOT change any of the default settings until you verify that the application is running as expected in its default state.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

NOTEsdRohan, You said "We, in support, have not had any reports of note on this issue."  Please note that in addition to myself, 2 other people with multiple computers have the same issue - see above in this thread.  Thank You.

Update - Start 10 is the Cause
I've uninstalled and used the Purge_StartALL.bat.   The explorer.exe faulting stopped.

I reinstalled Start10 1.56 and explorer.exe crashing is back.

The conclusion is that Start10 is causing explorer.exe to fault.

May I suggest you look into the issue.  Here are my user dump files:

I also have ProcessMonitor logs.

Thank You!

We looked at your dmp files before and there is no crash inside Start10 or even in a thread Start10 is called from.

It may be there is a combination of factors to make this happen but Start10 itself does not seem to be the root issue here, it may simply be exposing something else.  I tried the steps here and nothing crashes here.

My only thoughts on something to try are if you open an admin command prompt and run regsvr32 Start10Shell64.dll /u if this helps as perhaps there is a conflict between shell extensions and Start10 does add one to add the Pin to Start10 entry.

If there is an issue we obviously want to find it and any further logs you have may be useful, but we have a large userbase and this thread is the only time this has been reported and one of the reports here appears to relate to something different (blank taskbar doesn't seem to sound like your report)

If you are able to submit a ticket so support can gather further information on your setup it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.  I tried unregistering the dll (had to use this command:  regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Start10\Start10Shell64.dll" /u ).  Unfortunately it didn't help.  I am in contact with Startdock support and sent them my log files.

I'm hoping we can find the culprit.  Otherwise, I'll have to image my system partition and start uninstalling extensions (7-Zip, UltraSearch, WinRAR, etc.) one at a time until I hopefully find the cause.  Then restore the image and just uninstall the bad app. A time consuming process.  As I stated previously, uninstalling Start10 resolves the issue.  But I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

Using Autoruns (Tabs:  Logon, Explorer, Services), shexview, and shmnview I disabled ALL non-Microsoft entries.  The crashing stop.  But as soon as I re-enabled the Start10 Service, the crashing issue returned.  :-(

I've recently upgraded to v1.56 (registered user) and am running Windows 10 Creators v.1703 Build 15063.540.  I attempted to recreate this Explorer fault as described above and was not able to. I tried with a varying number of files and file sizes with no issue.  I also have several extensions (7-zip, Adobe, Eraser, Ultraedit, etc.) loaded.

I know this is no help to those who are experiencing this issue but thought is was worth mentioning. It's possible that that there is something other than Start10 that is causing this issue.

Still testing, but the following seems to have helped to reduce or possibly eliminate the issue.  I'll report back.

First try opening Nvidia Control Panel, click on Desktop Menu, and uncheck "Add Desktop Context Menu".

Also tried this:

A Repair Install ("In-Place Upgrade")
This procedure reinstalls Windows and keeps your data, apps and settings.
Instructions:  https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

Update:  Issue not resolved, but it happens less often.  Stardock forwarded my logs to the developers.

This issue was not fixed with the last Windows Update on 9/12/17 KB4038788:

"Addressed issue that sometimes causes Windows File Explorer to stop responding and causes the system to stop working."

Uninstalling following program did not resolve the issue after all:   XYplorerFree

Prior to continuing, I'd like to make sure the issue you are encountering is not occurring as a result of an application conflict. The best way to proceed would be to try loading under a new Windows Administrator account and in a "clean boot" state.

Create a new Windows Administrator (<--important that its an Administrator) account:

Windows 10:

  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10

Log in under that account and see if your issue persists.

If so, and while still under that new account, please click the link below for performing a 'clean boot' under it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

After you've loaded Windows in a clean state, please download this file:

http://sd.stardock.com/Support/Utilities/StartStart10.zip

Run the batch file in it to start the Start10 service.

See if your issue persists
