Getting culture flipped without warning

I had a happy "perfect" planet near the enemy's planets - I made sure it was happy because I was afraid it would flip. And it just did - so morale by itself doesn't seem to help. I am not sure what else to build or do to stave off flipping. Also, there was no big flashing red light to warn me that the planet was liable to flip soon. Rage-inducing! What listing do I need to look at to make sure my planets are not vulnerable aside from morale?

It's not morale that will keep a planet from flipping but influence. Build up culture centers.

So I need to mouse over my threatened planets to see what the state of their influence is each turn?

Increasing a planets resistance also helps.

Could it be that the one benevolent feature that flips all starbases and planets in one's sphere of influence was the cause?

Does anybody know if the AI is also subject to planetary and other events and so gains ideology points that it can spend for benefits like the player can?

Morale indirectly helps, since it increases both resistance and influence output at high levels and penalizes them at low levels.

I also notice having gone back that there was a little red icon above my planet before it flipped but since I play zoomed all the way out I didn't notice it.

They certainly get ideology points. It's easy to see with malevolents, as they tend to rush the "immune to cuture flip" trait, one of the few you can easily see.

You can tell when one of your planets will flip.... the first chance it gets! If its an AI planet,, well then it will be an exceedingly long slow drawn out process.
