Using extended screens in Windows 10

I have two monitors and I have been using extended screens for some time now.  I loaded Windows 10 and now when Fences Pro loads the screens are swapped from what they should be.  I go to layout and reload (look OK in the layout icon) and they again load on the wrong screens.  I swapped the back to where they should be - did snapshot and the next time loaded still wrong.  Looked at display settings and have monitor 1 as main display and Extend these displays.  Anyone else with this problem or know how to fix.

What I did was use only the screen you want it to appear on. First identify in Display settings and then select that monitor as the only one. Set up your fences and portals and unclick the setting that it allows it to move to the new monitor within layout of fence configuration.

Then set display settings to both monitors the way you want it.

My view is that Fences is buggy with regard to this movement of Fences and Portals. Specifically, there is a setting that allows you to set the pixels between fences but does not allow you to move ALL to the new monitor. If you try, and there is a wide discrepancy between the resolution, you will loose most of the fences and portals EXCEPT the one that you are moving.

Even if you scale to the resolution, it does so illogically.

However, the app still is very useful in keeping stuff organized. Stardock does not seem to focus much on this app and they should because it could be a really wonderful app if they work on it,

Fences Free/Pro is not supported.

Fences 2 v2.13 is supported and working on Windows 10 however.

The problems that we have been addressing, both Budman and I, refer to the problems in 2.13.

There are real difficulties using multiple monitors with differing resolutions. There are work around as I indicated, but they are not easy to find.

Furthermore, Portals also have problems when pointing to a Cloud folder. Again, there are workarounds, but the underlying program is a bit flawed.

Notwithstanding those flaws, Fences serves an important purpose for most of my clients: It forces them to remain a bit more organized and able to find shortcuts more easily.

Hi,

I am having the same problem but your solution is a bit vague.  Are you talking about settings in both Windows and Fences?

Here are my guesses for what you are suggesting:

"First identify in Display settings"  Not sure what you want us to identify.  Are you talking about Display in the Control Panel?

"and then select that monitor as the only one."  I selected "Show desktop only on 1"in the Control Panel.

"Set up your fences and portals."  Since this is the only monitor that displays the desktop now, the fences automatically appear on it.

"unclick the setting that it allows it to move to the new monitor within layout of fence configuration."  I unclicked this in Fences.

Whenever I try these and some variations, the fences always migrate to Monitor 2, even though Monitor 1 is the "main display."

Any thoughts about what is making this go awry?

Thank you.

OK, I finally have some time, Phew.

I think that what Windows does when you do exactly what you did, is, when the displays are extended, it does not keep the Main monitor as the one you selected and/or the number changes.

I will tell you, it took me a LONG time to make it work consistently.

When you unclick the move to new monitor, be sure to click on apply.

When you then extend the monitor, be sure to examine which is the Main monitor at that time. I believe that is the main gotcha. Also, make sure that you right click on the desktop, click on View, and lock the Fences. If you then try to unlock the fences and move them to a different screen, all the stuff, at least on my client's computers, had to be restored. Immediately after you lock them, therefore, take a snapshot from which to restore if you get it wrong.

Be sure that you watch all the details carefully. I am sure you did, but I never could keep it all together until I became VERY careful on exactly what was happening.

I am willing, if you want me to, to monitor what you are doing by using Teamviewer. You can give me temporary access and then remove Teamviewer when I am off.

Really, Stardock has been totally unresponsive to this problem so far. They have a new Beta out but only available to the Dock 2016, which is way overkill for me or my clients. I do not know what they have addressed in the 3 Beta.

Let me know how everything works out.

Albert
