GC III stalls when trying to process a turn with Huge galaxy

I am having a problem with GC III beta .82.  I am fairly far along in the game with 8 major and 8 minor opponents. The game has reached the point where it stalls when processing a turn. This seems to be a common problem with each beta release. I hear what you say , but it really needs to be fixed. It is a complete stall. I waited 4 hours and it still had stalled.

How did you manage to get this onto the front page of the website?

yeah... um that's really strange...

Stardock to fix this  as the "news feed" on the main webpage seems to indicate that you are announcing the game stalls   lol

If you have a save that is able to reproduce a stall I would love to see it. We both have people playing the game here as well as having computers that play against each other forever, so we have a reasonable system for catching issues like this. But that certainly doesn't mean that there may be something we missed that you are running into.

I understand your frustration. Many of us have been there, then found out that the problem was with our own computers. A post that has many good things to check is https://forums.galciv3.com/461332/page/1/#3535340 by Bamford. Of particular interest in your case would be how much RAM you have installed and what your system settings are for your "virtual memory". You can find what the OS thinks these are by running DxDiag and looking at the first section.

I have lots of stalling and freezing issues particularly when zooming in or out, or turning the map. I also get them when transitioning between screens like into the ship designer they can last 10 seconds to about 50 seconds during which time the game totally freezes, makes playing often frustrating.

I have 6GB Ram

An old 4 core Duo processor.

and a nVida GTX295 Video card.

I even get this on Medium sized galaxies, switching my card to single GPU mode seemed to help slightly though I still get some freezing, as did actually unloading rather than just disabling Bullguard. But I still get freezes some of which last up to 30 seconds, just not as often.

Noticed they don't seem to get these issues on the devstream.

Also the combat viewer is very prone to freezing and stuttering, wonder if it's because the GTX295 has only something like 860Mb ram for each GPU and it's pushing stuff in and out of graphics memory while the CPU is busy with the AI or something like that.

Econundrum, with only 6GB RAM I can see where the version 0.82 (Beta 5 patch 2) on your PC would be doing a lot of page swapping on all but the smallest two map sizes (and maybe even there). When the combat viewer becomes active it can cause even more page swapping. Beta versions prior to beta 5 would have been worse, since beta 5 includes some memory usage optimization. Also, I just saw an announcement that more memory usage optimization is coming real soon.

It may be worth while to check that the OS settings for virtual memory match the amount of RAM you have installed. With your 6GB the virtual memory setting should be "Minimum = 6144MB Maximum = 18432.

I can only guess about your GPU RAM, so I will only say maybe.

Thanks Lucky Jack you have a point about checking the Virtual Memory settings I will do that. I don't really expect my old PC to run the game that well on the larger map settings as I don't have an uber amount of RAM I know. Would be nice to see more performance improvements though, and to be fair the last couple of releases have improved things a little bit.
