Map Making Advice

Hi

I've seen numerous posts advising players to make a map which places the AI somewhere that they can't get at the player (this is for achievement farming)

However in the map building tool, it doesn't seem like you can do this... it just seems to randomly generate the map from the parameters you give it.

Am I misunderstanding the advice? the advice is just to put a heck load of pirate bases between the player and the AI?

People are probably talking about using galaxy forge which allows you to place planets in specific locations and choose the phase lane connections you want. There should be a galaxy forge folder in your default Sins of a Solar Empire directory (with steam, my directory is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Galaxy Forge

yours may be different however)

woeAINTme IS CORRECT, the custom maps for achievement farming are usually galaxyforge maps, BUT the old galaxyforge could load mapdesigner galaxys and create and allow you to edit the phase lanes so that the AI's can not enter your part of the map, and also use the fixed starting locations as well (this is to prevent YOU getting stuck in one of the AI trap zones)

just remember for rebellion, use the galaxyforge in the steamapps/sins...rebellion/galaxy forge as it is up to date for rebellion, whereas the download one is onle for trinity/diplomacy/entrenchment/vanilla sins.

I feel pretty stupid right now, and I've made maps before, but where are the maps from the galaxy forge supposed to be saved at? I've now saved it in Galaxy forge and in the regular galaxy directory under steam/steamapps/common/sinsofasolarempirerebellion, but nothing when i try to pull it up in game. It's been a while since I last did a map, but, am I missing something?

Do not alter any files in

steam/steamapps/common/sinsofasolarempirerebellion

that's what mods are for

if you want a mod with the galaxy folder, you need to include the galaxy.manifest in the mod as well and add the map to the manifest and update the count.

Most are happy with custom maps in the Galaxy Forge window or Map Designer Window which you get to by clicking "Change Maps" which are Small -> Medium -> Large -> Map Designer -> Galaxy Forge

C:\Users\[userName]\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\MapDesigner

C:\Users\[userName]\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\GalaxyForge

I have saved the galaxy forge map in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Galaxy Forge and in C:\Users\Devon\Documents\my games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Galaxy Forge as well as C:\Users\Devon\Documents\my games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Map Designer and when I go into the game, I go to the galaxy forge map selection and nothing is there. I then went to the Map designer section after saving it in that folder and nothing is there. I honestly can not figure out what the problem is. I've done this before for Sins Vanilla and Entrenchment and had no issues. So what is going wrong this time? It gets saved as a *.Galaxy file, and i can find it in my windows explorer, but not in-game.

Are you using the galaxy forge that comes in the Reb install folder? or the old one?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Galaxy Forge

the correct location for galaxyforge maps in rebellion IS the '\Documents\my games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\Galaxy Forge' as the galaxy files in the map designer folder MUST be in the map designer version of the galaxy format, and the ones in the game folder MUST be in the galaxy manifest to be even listed,

and the maps show up from the game folder in the small/medium/large pages, then the map designer maps in the mapdesigner page and finally the \my games\...\galaxy forge maps on the galaxy forge page of the map selection screen when starting a game

I have saved it there before, as is clearly said in my other post that states 3 different locations I've tried saving it.

I'll give it another go, but if it still doesn't show up, it reminds me of the trouble i had with sins vanilla.

this is the exact file path that i have currently, and it will not show up in game. C:\Users\Devon\Documents\my games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion\GalaxyForge

well, I found an issue, that i don't understand. Will some things in the map designer not be compatible with the game itself? I just made a map that only gives the 2 starting planets to see if it would load it, and it does. However my other map, which happens to have several different planets and some phases, will not load.

Quoting Bok_Armageddon, reply 14

might have had something to do with not having DLC and using DLC planets. I feel real stupid.
End of Bok_Armageddon's quote

Don't, I am sure that will will even get seasoned map makers.  XD

I'm pretty sure the random planets would cause such an error in which case I'd be amazed if you didn't make that mistake.

Check the top of the GSD file to see what is in the Random lists

EDIT: yup, all the dlc planets are in all the lists, this must mean that choosing a list with DLC will use the list but not with the DLC unless you own it. Or they would bork every map.
