feature requests for Start8. . .

Start8 version used: 1.0; installed on a fresh installation of Windows 8 Pro.

Hi there. These are a few feature requests for Start8:

1) Include the following on the Start Menu context menu: the ability to copy and move the Start menu shortcuts to another place in the start menu; the ability to rename them; the ability to create/send shortcuts of them to the Desktop.

2) Add the option to disable (or hide) all Modern UI app's shortcuts from showing on the Desktop's Start Menu, preventing any/all of those apps (shortcuts) from showing anyplace while in the Desktop environment.

3) Add the ability to prevent adding icons (shortcuts) of installed Desktop programs to the Modern/Metro UI.

Here's to hoping. ;-)

Start8 is looking very promising. Thank you for your offering.

regards,

Laurence

You can hide Modern UI applications from appearing in the all programs list by creating the HideMetroApps registry key at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8 and setting it to 1

I would also like the ability to customize the start menu items. Drag and drop, rename, reorder, move items around, etc...

Me too!! Does anyone know some other 3rd party application which would include features as start8 includes + possibility to rearrange start menu items?

Which items are you wishing to move around?

Pinned items can be reordered and the all programs list is sorted A-Z.

I would really like the all programs list to be opened with a new seperate menu on the right, just like in XP.

Also be able to have a complete black menu, no white on the left as it is.

Items in start menu - all programs. I.e create own folders there and move by drag and drop icons between folders, like it was possible in windows 7 start menu.

I second the last post. Any chance of that happening?

Thats something we have on the possible list.

For now you can do such arrangement via explorer.  Right click on the all programs menu and you should get a menu offering you to open the two locations Windows uses for Start menu items.

If I have the ribbon disabled (or enabled but then it's for the ribbon I guess, theres a dead spot at the top right, a millimeter to the right of the red X. A bit annoying as I always seem to miss the X.

Can this be fixed?

The top right corner deadspot when you have charms disabled is sorted in an updated 1.01 build.  Please note that the prerelease linked to on this forum does not contain this change, it will be in the final 1.01 only.

I get a prompt about admin right quite often. Can Start8 be elevated to admin rights by default?

When are you getting prompts?

Start8 does not require admin rights after installation.

Everything with this action prompts me about admin rights.

It sounds like you opened all users program files.  That would require admin rights and thats an OS security feature.

For now an answer to the 3rd item on my initial feature requests for Start8, which was "3) Add the ability to prevent adding icons (shortcuts) of installed Desktop programs to the Modern/Metro UI" (so that the Metro/Modern start screen does not become excessively cluttered) can be found in this little utility:

AutoPin Controller

Perhaps Stardock may yet implement and integrate something of their own.

regards,

Laurence

PS) Regarding Start8 v.1.03, I am using it and liking it. (And looking forward to future updates for fixes and enhancements). The Desktop UI in Windows 8 where I mostly 'live' makes Windows 8 more user friendly once agian. Thank you Stardock.

Already on the list.

@ Neil Banfield

From time to time in various postings I see you mention "the list" (sounds mysterious :-)) - is said list for internal viewing only, or can we also see what fixes and enhancements are presently on it?

Laurence
