Offline Achievements with Steam

Like many players out there, I do most of my Sins of a Solar Empire either offline or via LAN at a friend's house rather than online as my home connection is dial up (No really. Broadband isn't available in my area if you can believe that). I saw that Steam has an Achievement feature, and I was wondering if these would unlock if I played while Steam was in offline mode and sync up with my account when I do go online or if I just miss out on this feature entirely. Anybody know?

I believe you can still unlock the achievements when you are running Steam in offline mode. Your Steam friends will just not be able to see them, but you can browse through the ones you unlocked nonetheless.
