1-tile cities

Good Morning

So, I've been reading a lot of back and forth on the issue of 1-tile cities being incorporated into the beta 4.

Is this indeed the case?

If so... . I really like the way the cities are able to expand into multiple squares. It shows your empire growing into an urban greatness. With 1-tile cities, I might as well play Civ 4....it's a move in the wrong direction, imo.

Can anyone confirm this?

Maybe not the best category to make this thread in.

They will still expand a bit but not nearly as much. Every time you level your city you will be able to place a district that provides a bonus, instead of placing every building.

Yeah, I suggest you change the Category by Editing the post and clicking on Category.

Hopefully they will provide some way for Outposts to protect themselves and for Outposts and Cities to be able to protect external resources without having to have an army on every square.

From Beta 1 to beta 3 they did a great job. I have big confidence in Derek and the whole team. Lets wait for beta 4 before we make judgments.

I know i´m boring.

Thanks for the thread location tip.

Well, I'm glad that Stardock still intends to have the cities expand. I've been following the development of this game, and that is probably the most unique and alluring part that this game has to offer in regards to civilazation development.

I can agree that the snake-cities were quite rediculous, but it would still be nice to be able to build a long city across a ridge or shoreline or something like that...

1-tile city is a bit of a misnomer. Think of it as reduced tiles cities.

Reduced is fine. Having 15 tiles stretched linearly across the screen is silly.

Having a 3x3 city (max) as your capital can be quite appealing.

I think it will be a better system because choosing districts will make cities look unique instead of now where you just build everything and there are so many buildings all cities look and act the same.

I'm really surprised by the concurrence on 1-tile cities.  I thought for sure a group like this would go for the more creative (not done in other games) approach that we have today.

P.S.  Lantros, you are so boring!  :-)

I would love to see the city graphics expand into the surrounding tiles, but functionally be exist on one tile. Perhaps two if it is simply massive.

I think those of us who championed the multi-tile cities have just accepted the reality that Stardock are going to make this change.

x_x RIP: it really was a novel feature, but it's appeal was mostly cosmetic.  Rendering every city on the main map is definitely a performance drag and as far as I can tell one-tile wont remove any gameplay elements (except the teleportation/roadblock cheese).

Speaking personally, the vast improvements in the game through Beta 3 have relieved a lot of my angst about the decision making at Stardock.  The game is good now.

Yea pretty much, though it gave a big thumps down to FE in my notebook...

Derek will have more on this soon.

But after much back and forth, it was decided that we're not going to have 1 tile cities. Instead, they'll be just a few tiles (much much smaller than what we have currently).  The objective being to let players see at a glance what the city does.

Improvement categories will upgrade into better versions.

For example, right now, you would have a study and a school and a library and a college and a university and on and on.

Not only does this use a lot of physical space in the world, it also makes it hard to tell what that city is specializing in (not to mention that the old city system doesn't lend itself to specialization so you just end up having a bunch of generic cities).

A typical late game city might be using 24 tiles. Now, it'll be more like 4 to 5.

Having the smaller cities has also let us decrease the # of tiles between cities from 8 to 6.

Whoa !   A lot of folks are going to like that last change ! ...  I sure will ...

Big thumbs up to the improve a building option - that will have a dramatic impact on the game and will allow more meaningful choices as to how to specialize a city - for example: do i want to upgrade my lumbermill to improve material production or gold production or weapon production building time

If there weren't 2000 miles between us, I would bake the entirety of Stardock cookies for this alone.

So very, very excited for Beta 4.

Oh good news. This actually makes me look forward to beta 4 again and not be afraid that you're not treating the player feedback with the WoM route.

What frogboy describes is way better than I expected, all I want is big cities xD, and I mean gigantinormous pleasently looking cities, the better the graphics on my big cities the happier I sit and clap... while designing weapons of mass destruction ofcourse... >_<.
Ps. don't hug uranium, its not pleasant.

Oh wow, that's the best news I've heard on that topic in a long while... I'm glad we still get some ability for placement. Even if reduced, it'll still be enough to choke things that need choking. Though I'm not sure all those people who were crying about the world city scape would be too happy with that 6 tile limit, heh.

That's what I get for being resigned to something happening. Can I just say how much I appreciate Brad's participation on these forums.

Great news! I'm really curious now if you're planning on overhauling the UI for city building.

Have looked forward to 1-tile-cities with an extra screen (especially because it would have opened the possibility for more of the fabulous painted 2-d art. I very much like its style). Have to look how this recent change plays out, sounds doable. But looks like I'm in the minority with my preference of 1-tile cities.

Awesome.  I really like the bigger cities so this makes me happy.   And I can still use my city's secret underground subway system to move super fast.

I'm very happy to hear this!  I had also resigned myself to 1-tile cities, and am happy to hear that cities will grow and have their own personality in Beta 4.
