A steam issue and a starbase suggestion

Probably known, but Rebellion is the only Steamworks game that I've played that gives me an error when I try to launch without Steam running. All the rest auto launch Steam for me first, then boot up the game. Not sure if I'm missing something here.

Second, a slight buff to starbases. With titans coming to Sins, massed capital ships are becoming increasingly vital to defending against and countering against them. I'm beginning to adopt an offense fleet and a mobile titan hunter/killer fleet, instead of the standard offense and relatively static defense fleets.

My thoughts would be to allow starbases to repulse foreign culture much like capital ships. The same rules concerning enemy/neutral planets would apply, but the amount of repulsion would be lower. Say, starting at .15, and increasing .03 per upgrade, something that makes it useful, but only equivalent to a low level capital ship.

The numbers can be tweaked, obviously, but any thoughts on the idea? I get the feeling multiplayer generally ignores offensive culture, so this won't affect it much (though may discourage it more).

Never had any problems running the game while I had no internet access (Steam offline mode enabled of course).

Starbases can be really powerful when fully upgraded. Consider the  Overcharge Reactor ability every now and then, it makes for an excellent titan counter.

Good idea, though I think the dev's left this as an ability unique to the Advent starbase because they didn't want the races to become too similar. Also, this gives the Advent starbase a little more significance when not engaged in active combat (where the Orkulus can move and the Argonev can extend trade routs).

Just to point out that they can all extend Trade Routes, the Argonev's unique things are that it can be used as a factory and to repair and restore antimatter to nearby ships.

Sorry, I'll be a little more clear. I don't have Steam remember my password, nor do I log in Steam every time I restart my computer. Usually when I start a Steam game, it brings up the Steam login window for me to sign in, then starts the game after I do so. With Rebellion, I just get an Error window that says "Failed to Initialize Steam", and I have to close that, bring up/log in Steam, then try the game again. This assumes I'm using the shortcut, not launching Rebellion through the Steam program list in the start menu. A big deal? Not really, but a bit strange.

Thanks for clearing that up. Never tried starting the game that way, I just have Steam always running in the background, so I wouldn't know if my game would crash as well when I would start it up the way you do...

XubXub it is a known issue if you have a shortcut directly to the .exe
