XX, there are cheaper alternatives than Segway to walking or driving: bicycle, scooter (motorized or not), rollerblades...
That's the thing I don't undestand. I don't see what's so new about this thing, other than it stands upright by itself...

But Crae, it doesn't fall over. Duh!

Reality check:

People don't walk and ride their bikes. Many people do but many don't. I don't care whether people think I should ride my bike to the stores or walk to them. I don't want to. I want something easier that doesn't require me to use a car. This fits that need.

We live in a world in which people drive their cars .25 miles. Sure, they SHOULD ride their bikes or walk but they're too much hassle for whatever reasons. The Segway is a lot less hassle to deal with (that's the theory anyway, we'll see in practice but I feel it's going to be less hassle). You can't easily steal the thing as it has a key and if you pick it up without the key it'll scream bloody murder. Sure, I wouldn't go to a bad part of town with it but for my needs it'll work fine.

But my main point is that the arguments about hwo we should use our bikes or walk are pointless because most people don't. When I ride my bike to the store, I'm the only one on the side walk. Discussing how things SHOULD be is meaningless. We're talking about how things actually ARE.

OK Frogboy, I hear you. But please explain how this is less hassle than a bicycle?

heh pretty many benefits. its powered for one.

no unconfortable seat ( thats why i hate bicycles its those seats thats actally smaller than my err ass crack. )

for me i like walking more than riding. this is much more familiar to me.

once i could do initial payment its much cheaper than car in terms of maintance or insurance ( none for ginger ) all it needs is some recharging and range is bit more than enough for traveling to work and back.

You can buy an electric scooter for the same benefits you mentionned. Plus it's 1/10th of the price.
I don't mean to argue, I really just want to see a single benefit for this. So far I can't.

I just saw a few people driving around using IT/Ginger/Segway in the parking lot (their R&D office is two buildings down from mine in N.H.). It looked pretty cool. I wanted to pull over and ask to try it. Though I think their wheel chair was far cooler and would have more of an immediate benefit.

/me thinks Paxx has shares in a bicycle company, hence the vehemence.

Anyway, knowing our government, (England) they hate anything innovative, so they will declare it dangerous and make users have a man with a red flag walk 10 paces in front of them!!

(And you all think I'm joking. I wish I was!)

From what i've read, it's principally a matter of control. That one really feels like they're in total control. A bike is unstable unless it's moving. So when I come to a stop, I have to get off the bike and stand. Not a big deal but in the city, I just don't feel like I have the same control.

I want walk really but be able to walk faster and without getting tired. This thing is like enhanced walking.

well....if you ride a bike often enough you can learn to balance without having to move...you must have seen bicycle courier's doing this, plus you become more comfortable riding in city traffic the more you actully do it

...hey...I don't care if any of you want a Segway, go right ahead, if I had a spare $3000 just lying around I'd prolly buy one too, just have some fun on.

I prefer a really good mountian bike (which can cost must more than a Segway)...each to there own 'eh

needs a lawnmower attachment....

needs at least 7" travel suspension, big fat off road tyres, disc brakes, wider handle bars, lighter construction, more grunt...
How can you have more control than with a bike? The bike is the most optimised piece of equipment out there engineering-wise (or that's the common myth is designland).
Crae: The biggest design fault that I can see with the bicycle, is that I have to PEDAL the damn thing!! lol
Reply #44 Top
As they say...'If God had wanted us to walk, he wouldn't have joined our legs together at the top so we could sit and ride a bicycle'...

Ok, Ok, Ok...

we have all said our me's and you's with this peice of SHT technology. I think Transmutatate is on to something here. What would improve it to actually make it more practical?

I think if they added 2 more tires, a radio and a....

They'll need to come up with an accessory to hide our ever growing asses.
So is there any way to get one of these early? Why even talk about it if you can't even buy one unless you're the government?

Third Eye: "Yes it is "neat" but seriously, how much more lazy do we need to get?"

Dude, If I don't have to actually have to walk anywhere to get my coffee then power to the Segway..

/me 's off to rob a bank.
