A Call for Rebellion's BIN/TXT Converters

Presumably, the Devs already have tools to convert between BIN and TXT formats, and I think it would be great if those tools were released to the modding community...not asking for anything fancy yet (like Galaxy/Particle Forge), just the ConvertData that I would think already exists in a working form...

To an extent, I can understand why the Devs may be unwillingly to do this...if people have access to the entity files and what not, then they could try and port over "Rebellion content" (like ability ideas) to Diplomacy...but much of the new content cannot be ported over...

No matter how creative a modder is, they can't take the unique Titan armor/weapon type, or the new class of corvettes, or the new entity modifiers, etc. and put it in Diplomacy....furthermore, the things that can be ported over (like the textures, certain conceptual ideas, and some of the particle effects) aren't safeguarded to begin with...

I feel doing so would not only be nice for the community, but would be in the developers' best interest...Rebellion clearly has a host of problems (and of course it would, it's only the first Beta after all!), and there's been a lot of feedback about what's wrong with this current version...

Unfortunately, simply knowing what's bad doesn't necessarily tell you what's good...for example, a lot of people think Titans are too powerful, so clearly we have a problem...but what is a good solution?  There are a whole host of things one could do to change this (reduce the DPS, weaken the abilities, put them later in the tech tree, make them more expensive, make them level up faster/slower, etc.), but it would take a ton of theorizing and play testing to determine the best set of changes...without modding capabilities we, as a community, can do nothing but sit on our heels and wait for the next Beta (which's "improvements" may not even be for the better)...

The community has the time and the manpower to implement many changes and quickly test them...the Devs, I'd think, simply don't...as such, I feel that by allowing modders to try out balancing of their own, the Devs will get higher quality feedback that will accelerate their move to a more polished product...I'd rather give feedback like "Moving Titans higher in the tech tree seems to solve the problem" than simply "TITANS ARE OP...RARRR"...

Being able to see the txt of what's going on internally, while of no modding value atm, will help the data monkeys have a better understanding of the mechanics of Rebellion and give better feedback.

I'm bumping this...in hopes someone of importance may see it...

They won't release until the official release of Rebellion, if they did it would impact on the Beta test of the unmodded game and that is the game they are concerned about.

On the bright side, when they do finally release, it will also be with a new particle forge etc :)

I actually hope they don't nerf the Titans. I like the idea of them being able to take out an entire fleet of ships.

Later in the tech tree? Maybe. Not my call. But the Titans don't need a nerf. No ******* way.

Titans need to have more of a viable counter the corvettes right now are more of comic relief then a viable option against titians as the loyalist Tec just melts anything under an HC and the rebels anything that is in front is dead.......agreed let the modders have a go we have a good community for doing such a thing

The problem is whoever has the higher level titan is almost always going to win right now. If you decided to expand your economy a bit first and the other guy rushed the titan, you're probably going to lose. I had a game with some friends where he sent a level 1 titan and a fleet of LRMs and HCs to take out a level 4 titan, level 4 titan took care of the fleet with easy and just made it stronger by giving it XP. They need to have something to counter them that's not a titan, and as it stands right now there just isn't.

Corvettes should be the counter but at the moment they are totally worthless to me to build.

I've already purchased the game, why should the give a damn lol? I will never play on a multiplayer server with anyone other then friends and family as people don't know how to put down the hacking tools.

In addition my game will be modded when it's released so it wouldn't make sense to withhold the tools now. Modding for sins has always been the most fun part about the game anyway.

But there is a somewhat obvious reason why they haven't released it already but i'm not saying anything i want the tools.

Yes time to let the modders to start getting their mods upgraded so when the patches comes, we can upgrade and be ready shortly for release when the final game is done.
