fleet movement

in the game.

the fleet buttons for movement, has

cover the grav. well

cover the local area.

dont move.

i dont know how much programing it would take.  but can we base these commands off of the fleet flag.   if i tell a ship or group of ships to cover the grav. well then they would be free to move where ever as fast as they can.  if i tell them to stay local, then they stay with in a certain distance of the flagship.  if however tell the ships not to move, they would stay in formation around the flagship.  this is how real fleets work.

The fleet cohesion behavior is what you're looking for.  This determines how much the tactical AI prioritizes keeping the fleet together and avoiding spreading out.

The movement behavior options you're talking about are not fleet behavior, they are for individual units.   Making the behavior work differently depending on whether the unit is in a fleet or not would be very inconsistent and confusing.  That just wouldn't work in practice.

I should add that many players, myself included, hate the fleet feature and never use it at all.  I prefer to control my units individually, and find the fleet behavior gets in the way more often than it helps.

perhaps but you still have the option of not turning it on.  i dont see how making a fleet move more like it should would be upsetting to those who dont use the fleet option to start with.

but who wants to see their repair cruisers run off in front of everyone else to take on that cap ship or starbase.

The point is that that the targeting behavior is by single unit, it is does not have any respect to the fleet system.  The behavior you're looking for is the fleet cohesion behavior, and your suggestion is to have the programmers code two completely different versions of the targeting behavior depending on whether a unit is in a fleet or not.

Then set your cohesion settings to "tight" so they stick close to the fleet, or put your repair cruisers in a separate group and change their targeting settings for some manual control.
