Is This Game Playable?

I purchased this game today at Wal-Mart for 30 bucks and I got it home and tried to play it some. It has been, so far, totally unplayable. I tried to update it and the Impulse software cut my download speed of 1/3 of what it should have been downloading at. I bought this in hopes that it would be a modern equivalent of MoM because I loved that game and sunk so many hours in. I have more than the recommended specs and the game still plays terribly slow, they're are huge chunks of my map that are just black with no terrain, the characters (When I can get them to move) move at a snails pace.

My main question is, will this game ever be playable, maybe after I get patch 1.1 if Impulse isn't being terribly slow....

Does it make it playable? Like I can play for more than five turns without getting frustrated at the lag and quit?

Turn down some of the graphics settings.  A patch won't magically make an underpowered computer perform like a powerhouse.

1.1 makes it playable.....but even with my high end rig zooming in STILL drops to like 1 fps.......the game is still just kinda in a meh state to me anyway.... just isnt fun....better then it was but not fun for anyone with galactic civ 2 on there harddrive

Yes, get 1.1 right away. It's massively better. Still far from perfect but much much much better. And the great part is that without a doubt Stardock will continue to work on this game and it will continue to get even better. They have said that the open beta for 1.2 will start soon after Christmas. If you are one of those rare people who still have technical problems then just post your debug and it will be fixed in the next patch.

It's playable with 1.1, but you probably want to wait until the first expansion to fire it up. It's going to be a different game to the one you can play now.

Civ 5 is like that...buggy, laggy and many people crashing.

Is that why you ask?

With Elemental, I've played straight for 4 hours the other night...hundreds of turns..without a single crash.  Especially with v1.1.

Also, if you purchase Elemental before 1 Jan 2011, you will receive one free expansion.

Really? That makes me feel better about using my money. I thought I had wasted it.... My computer is exactly at the recommended specs for the game.

1.1 is stable. It's not strategically playable yet.

No need to worry really.

Hang around here and you'll see the frequent postings directly from the development team and the CEO himself.

They know the state of the game and know our concerns, suggestions, praises and also complaints.....and this was really the selling point for me.  They do listen.

I too was "worried" before I leaped in but now I don't feel that way.  The support Stardock offers is [alive] and constructive, unlike other game companies where post-release support 'disappears'.  But don't take my word for it; you'll experience that for yourself... I am certain.

1.1 Is playable, VERY stable and reasonably fun for me. Turn times get a bit long in the late game but its nothing like Civ V's turn times. Its come a long way and will only get better, get it all updated and find a graphics setting that works for you and you'll probably enjoy it.

I am going to try and stick around then, I was just disappointed because I wanted to remember MoM.

1.09e or earlier (ie. in the box) will no doubt frustrate you and ultimately piss you off... to avoid most of that patch up to 1.1.

1.1 still has room for improvement but it is a playable game at that point.  Stardock has promised more to come in 2011.

the game is all around much better, much more intelligible and much more stable. i average a crash every 12 hours of play time or so, and the game makes much more sense. the AI seems smarter in general and the game is much improved. son, i am not disappoint.

Define "playable".  If "playable" means "to play without crashing much", then yes it's playable.  If "playable" means "to have an enjoyable, strategic, fun, and challenging experience", then no it's not playable.

not to mention the fact that we have an excellent mod community and it will get even better when they start opening it up to them even more.

Yeah, this is pretty much dead on. Version 1.1 is stable.

But, quite a few people, myself included, are getting very poor FPS right from the start of the game on systems that are well above the recommended specs.

And, it really feels more like a strategy-lite game than others in the genre.

So, is it playable? Yes and no. While you can play it, you probably won't want to at this point.

I think the game is great. I also keep updating my EXE to the latest one that Frogboy puts up and the AI IS SO MUCH better. Still has a ways to go though. I know that a lot of people are probably not playing the AI on the hardest difficulty because you have to manually set each AI to the difficulty you want.

ATM it has the learning curve of a strategy game, yet none of the depth/content. I don't mention the AI as we know thats being worked on. I'm waiting patiently for any news on future patches for all that other stuff. Quite a few bugs and game breaking mechanics that still need to be mowed down and the game doesn't yet have that 'one more turn' feel either. For me its more of a...click end turn, rinse and repeat, yawn. Winning the game is more of a grind/inevitability than anything involving strategy/fun atm. Though I suppose thats subjective.

It's totally playable. You absolutely NEED the patch. The original released game was a total mess, and now with patch 1.1 (which is about the millionth patch) it has made it FAR better. So you can play it and there is 'some' enjoyment to be had from it. I think what Rata said is true though, it still doesn't have much depth or content yet. If they can add this it could be the best game of it's kind, but I'm still waiting for it to be added.

I think the game was so messy, it has taken all this time just to make it stable. But I think they have achieved that now with 1.1, now they need to start focusing on making the game actually fun and good.

#1) The game is playable. You run into memory leaks and the occasional crash, but it's playable.

#2) By playable, I mean you will actually have some fun playing the game.

#3) The game is far from polished / finished... but there's so much potential. I drool.

If you were purchased it hoping for MoM or something like MoM be prepared to be very disappointed.  Maybe sometime in the future I just think it might be too far away for me to even care about this game by that point.

When you play you will be better off removing the thoughts of MoM from your mind completely.
