Uhm, this game is hard....

Playing on Normal... not really an RTS guy so I'm sure I'm doing things in a non-efficient manner...

But damn, this game is hard...

Cities are  bewildering..  Basically, I'm just building anything and everything in each city as it is available.  What I don't understand is when/why I can build some things in some cities, not in others, etc...

I can barely afford to buy anything...

Things seem to be going along swimmingly until I have to fight the aI and find that they're apparently vastly more powerful than me and my units... Spells miss, weapons miss, and I get spanked!

I've begun reading the player made guide, and slowly I'm  figuring more and more out...

But damn!  Still it's a lot of fun

glad you are enjoying the game

until the 1.1 patch building lots of cities is a good idea (and maybe after 1.1 as city spam is a problem for most turn based games)

the idea is to put cities near resources and then build buildings that increase those specific resources.  Some buildings have a cost per turn so building everything isn't always a good idea, although I like to get one or two level five cities.

Food and money are linked, I'll let you discover why if you haven't already.

Also adventuring is a good source of money.

Lastly, you can build a good army with summoned creatures and your sov.  Get enough mana for the teleport spells (15 I think)

Ok, your first issue seems to be that you are building everything you can.

Only build that which will give a meaningful return in the city, no point building something that increases arcane research by 10 or 20% if you only have 1 point of it in the city. Oh, also I always build all the starting out +1 buildings, you know workshop, lab etc in each city, and don't forget to build some defencive units, or you will get rolled.

So the easy return buildings get built everywhere, the specialisation ones do not. Also watch out for the markets that turn food into gold! if you don't have  a lot of food or a lot of +gold buildings, do not build them!Only build for what the city has in bonuses resources.

After the 1.1 patch, building a lot of cities will still be a good idea IMHO, but leveling those up will not, which leads us to the next possible issue, housing!
When you do settle a new city, at the moment you should defiantly be looking for spots with more then one resource, unless that resource is food, always take some food. You cant grow your cities unless you have food. Don't needlessly build housing. Make sure you have further upgrades you relay want in that city.

At the moment you want to spreed the houses you can build out, maybe have one super sized city and the rest at level 2-3. why? so we can fix your next problem, unable to build!Different buildings have different city sized requirements. The best upgrades you cant get until you are level 4 or even 5.

Caravans will help you with money and food, its one of my first runs on tech to get! I still don't have a 100% grasp on how they work with the internal game mechanics, so I run the 'all roads lead to Rome'.Which ever of my cities will be the main one early on and gets at lest 2 gold resources and the mint and the palace, gets all my caravan roads form each city.

As for combat, you want to balance out your research into what you are lacking in, if you fall behind in combat research more warfare, fall behind in advancing you cities research some more civ., this is part of why you always build those level one buildings, to get the arcane and spell research points.

My last piece of advice is, when you have figured out where you are currently going wrong, put the AI on its hardest level, that will help build you some real skills. Guitar hero is the only game I've ever played that I haven't automatically jumped up to hardest level sine the good old days and doom came out. It also increase the repeatability, if you cant go further, then drop down one level, and then try to work back up to it.

One last bit, don't forget the eXplore and eXpand part of the 4x's. If you are not out their pushing back the fog of war, all the good resources will be taken.

Lack of food is probably the #1 reason that you are unable to build some important items.  Research diplomancy until you can build caravans.  Plural.  Caravans have a big impact on food generation.  Any time a caravan gets destroyed, replace ASAP.

Lack of materials is an early game problem.  The easiest way to get around this is to hire a couple of a heroes and have everyone go different directions while looking for stuff to loot.  Caravan wreckage is almost always materials.  Besides this, I almost always build the structure that generates materials before any thing else (Slave Pit for one side...).

Other things require a certain population or city rank before they can be built.  As you play, this will get clearer.

This one has to be in the list of recruitable heroes.

When it comes to city spam, I always build on resources, but I only upgrade my forts if they will benefit from the upgrade.

For example, if I have a gold mine in my fort I know that when my fort grows to level 2, I will be able to upgrade my gold production 25% and when it grows again to level 3, I'll get another upgrade of 30%. So I upgrade this fort as high as I can for the increased production.

If the fort has no upgradable resource or none that I can link up with, then I just build the basic gold, research and material buildings with no huts and keep it as a fort. Then I can use the fort for a caravan, healing or shopping. That way I am not wasting my gold and materials upgrading forts that really don't get any benefits from the upgrade.

It's not really hard, it just seems it at first because everything is new to you. The game is actually quite easy once you know how.

My suggestion is to take your time more. It's not a RTS (real time) so you don't have to hurry. You can take all day to take one turn if you like. So take your time, and read what everything does. It's not worth just building all the buildings because you'll just run out of money. You should read what the buildings do and then plan. Just split it up so that each of your towns specialises on something different. So you can have one that just focuses on making good units, etc. There are some buildings that seem worth having in every town though, I usually like to give every town some walls to help defend, and I usually like for every town to generate as much food as possible.

That's really all this game requires though. Build some good towns and then you will be able to afford to build lots of good units. Then you just use those and your heroes to go out and dominate the world. It's all about resources really. If you build some good towns in places that let you mine all the gold and take the horses and stuff, then you will be rich enough to build good units and then you can go and capture enemy towns to give you even more gold and food and resources to build even more good units. That's all there is to it.

Then you just have to take your time attacking. Send out armies to attack but make sure you don't leave your towns undefended. If you can attack well and defend well at the same time, you'll win the game.
