My first advanced sandbox game

I have got quite a long way into my first long sandbox game now. Just got my capital to level five city too!

As the game is now quite advanced i am surprised to find there is quite a substantial lack of money? I have never seen anything like it before in any other game, to be so advanced, yet so poor? And there seems to be very little capacity to do anything about it apart from demolishing buildings that cost 1 guildar maintenance (big woop).

I have a huge empire and around 30 cities and every single city upgrade bonus so far has gone on guildar.

My capital managed to have two gold mines and i have put all the bonuses and special economic buildings in it and all the upgrade bonuses on guildar.... I'm seeing 25% guildar bonuses all over the place from various things etc etc and with all that, the city puts out a massive 60 guildar per turn! wow, at that rate i sure will retire a millionaire in this game (extreme sarcasm alert).

At one point my overall income per turn was actually going down, but i went berserk demolishing buildings that cost maintenance left right and center and managed to get back up to a whopping 20 guildar income per turn.

For quite a good portion of time i have not noticed this problem because of the false economy provided by relics, but relics are a finite resource and as they come to the end of their life, the economy now is showing its true delinquency.

I wonder if i should actually start destroying all my cities except for those with gold mines?? i dunno,,All i can say is that I am quite grateful that I'm playing on beginner difficulty because i don't see how it would be possible to actually have a real war when there is basically no income available to sustain it!

Did you research additional gold mines from adventure branch? These are kind of 'must have'. My capitals usually generate far above 100g/turn.

Why should you? Most of buildings don't have maintenance, and ones which do are % bonuses for cities with according resource nodes. Sure you should not build % buildings when there is no resource in the first place.

Also, leveling cities with gold mines and picking gp bonus on level-up is good idea.

At last you could try refined economy techs, they give quite nice bonus as well.

I'm with DKL. Use those techniques & you shouldn't have an issue. I currently have about 20 cities and am generating 100+gilder per turn. I have about 2k in reserve, substantial armies that are more than able to defend my empire, and have never needed to destroy buildings. You can also find other factions that have big cash reserves and trade with them. The minor ones love to give up $ for diplomacy. You also have to be a little more conservative than our government; I mean, can't spend more than you're bringing in

I agree with DKL and Phylast, I've never really had substantial gold problems late, except once.  The only time I had a gold income problem it was caused by too many units.  I had built a lot of units at different stages and none of them ever died.  I solved my gold problem by dismissing a bunch of weakling units I still had floating around.  Also recruiting +1 gilder heroes can help (a little).

Agree, Specialize the hell out of gold producing cities. Hire Merchant Champs. Specialize and caravan food cities so you can afford the food upkeep on Merchant improvements. Sell materials to minor factions (or diplo, metal, crystals, and mounts if there is a surplus). Kill off useless troop units. And don't forget trade treaties either. Yes they may cost you a chunk of gold to entice the other faction, but they are worth it in the long run.

Thanks for all the ideas, now there is this new 109 patch, i wonder will it change things much?

As for food, i had an abundance of food, owing to the fact that i had a city with three farms plus all the farm upgrades, guilds etc and two farming heroes there as well! Food knows how to show respect to multipliers, Guilders do not!
