Eager noob Intro

Firstly an intro, Hi all, I have been playing both strat and MMORPG games for as long as I care to remember. I have downloaded the demo for DemiGod and been pleasantly surprised at the fullness of the game play. So far i have only been experiemnting with the Rook and Lord Erebus, I prefer caster archtypes mainly. The game has impressed me with regards to the character tree abilities and the building tree abilities. On a micro level there is a lot going on in this game and I have found myself putting in a fair amount of time to understand the demo game.

I do have some questions however that I would like the more seasoned players to respond to,

1) How big is the online community, I am based in the US on EST, is there usually someone to challenge on a weeknight after 8:00pm?

2) Are there still regular tournaments that are being held?

3) What is the current state of the game, play, expansion, sequel ect?

4) I have been playing mostly closed single player games in the demo, i dont see an offline option in the demo. Is a single player mode offline available in the full game?

5) The BIG one, I noticed there was a 75% coupon code available. Does this apply to both the CE and Standard edition? Would any of the current members be so kind as to provide a noobie with the opportunity to purchase the game at discount?

Thanks in advance, hope to meet many of you online soon. Before someone flames me, I do know how to us ethe search function my questions a little more specific.

You can look on dgstats.insidesupcom.de for that. The times are GMT+1 so you have to substract 6 hours in order to get EST.

Glad to help you out.

Not that big, but big enough that you'll be able to get games going.  If you go here, you can see some statistics of players online along with games in progress and open.  The total players online stat is a little misleading, but at most times, there are anywhere from 15-40 games up and running.  I'd estimate that we have a core community of people who have been around for some time of around 75-100 people and we are adding new players on a regular basis due to marketing.  Most of the time I'm playing is between 6pm-2am and there are quite a few people on then.

2) Are there still regular tournaments that are being held?

Depends on what you mean by your question.  If you are talking about a tournament where brackets are used, etc, then no.  We've never had anything regular and only had 2-3 official ones.  There is however, a regular pantheon tournament.  This really isn't much of a tournament, per se, and is a generally flawed system.  Generally, pantheon works like this:  everyone picks a side at the start of the tournament, light or dark (5 demigods on each side).  Then, you can only play on light or dark for the duration of the tournament.  Here's where the system gets a little flawed.  There is no matchmaking based on skill.  It simply queues up individuals based on the light or dark team they selected.  So, quite often, there are big mismatches.  Also, many games end up being 1v1.  And some characters aren't exactly viable in 1v1 vs the stronger characters.  Anyway, just about all of the very good games occur in custom games (imo).

3) What is the current state of the game, play, expansion, sequel ect?

We have modding, so we can fix things ourselves (as long as we can get other players to download and use the mods). AFAIK, there is no additional content planned for Demigod at this point.  That might change when Gas Powered Games finishes Supreme Commander 2, but I doubt it.  The game does have documented bugs. The stat system for the game can be exploited with relative ease.  But, the game is quite a bit of fun, which is why many seasoned players are still here fighting it out.

Single player is available offline.  There is a skirmish mode and a tournament mode for SP.  There's not really a SP story or anything all that exciting outside of some character movies for finishes the tournament mode with each player.

I don't know.  I gave my coupon code up.  Check the various threads on the forum to see what you can find.  As another option, I've seen there are target stores on clearance for $10 or so.

And last -  if you do get the game, be sure to host NOOB games.  Even if you feel like you might be great.  If you don't want to host, make sure you join noob games while you are getting your bearings.  If you want to use voicechat and play with the more seasoned folks, search for clan pacov on the forums and you can get the vent server info.

  1. The online community is tiny, but if you join a clan and get a voicechat program called vent, you can find balanced games a lot easier (The forum community is great here though)
  2. There is an online feature called Pantheon that lets you choose a side and fight to earn favor points for your team, but it doesn't work very well, instead, I recommend that you always go for custom games.
  3. There have been a few updates, and it sounds like there will be more a few months from now. It sounds like new content will cost money however.
  4. The single player mode consists of matches versus the AI which is incredibly weak. There is no campaign, so your only option, should you get this game, is to play online (assuming you want a challenge)
  5. I believe coupons only work with the standard edition, and there still are some out there. There is a thread where they give coupons out in the general section I believe.

If you get this game, pick your favorite demigod, read about him in the strategies section, then play about 40 to 50 noob games. People are very particular about who the play with, and you need to get some games under your belt before yous start playing mid skill and no noob games. Good luck, this is a fun game with beautiful graphics, although it does have some flaws.

Thanks to all for the quick responses, you are helping my make my decision. So far it sounds good, I will check at Target as suggested by pacov above. The noob hint is a good one, and I understand from my WRC and WTFT days how frustrating it can be to play against new players. We have all been a new player at some point.

Thanks again for all the help, I will keep you updated on my plans.

1) 500-1000 players online at any given time, 1-10 games up in custom game lobby (WORLDWIDE)

2) lolno

3) game has some balance issues, gameplay wise you need to get used to 350ms build in response delay + lots of exploits which allow people to leave, crash the game, and not recieve a loss (*invalid gamestate error*), expansion/sequel see response 2)

but for 75% off you can't really go wrong.

I agree - if you can get this for 75% off and all you even want to do is play against meh AI, I'd still think its worth it.

Speaking of AI - I'd recommend Peppe's skirmish mod for single player.  The mod is a HUGE improvement over the stock AI.  When I was learning, I played quite a bit against AI just to own the basics and learn the dgs.  Consider checking that out as a training tool as well.

lol, I know when I thought more about it getting a $30 game for $8 it doesnt really make sense asking to many questions. I ended buying it online about 10 minutes ago. Now I cant wait to get home and play it.

ShakeNBake you mentioend a 350ms delay, are you saying there is a lot of lag during multiplayer games via the net?

It only lags if you live to far away from the other players in the match (I live in U.S. and can easily play with Europeans) the game has a built in 350ms response time so if your ping is that or lower to all the players in the game (and theirs to the other players, sometimes you have 150 to someone 300 to the other but they have 400 to each other).

Not really a lot of lag per se. Just the game runs at 350 ms. Meaning, any connection speed or latency better than 350 ping is ignored. So... the game isn't super responsive, but it plays well and the lag isn't noticeable unless, and this is a GIANT unless, someone's connection jumps above 350 ping. Then, the game grinds to a halt.

Also, the online play is disrupted by slow computers. This is measured by Sim Speed, which is essentially a measurement of each computer's ability to play the game. Sim Speed is measured as a multiple of the number of times over that your rig can run the current graphics load. Everyone in the current game gets a score from 1-10, 10 being the highest. Most computers I've seen in the 4-8 range. Below 4 and you might have problems in larger (4v4 and 5v5) games in larger maps. When someone's Sim Speed drops below 1, then things get dicey. The game has a tendency to get more graphically intense as it continues, so low Sim Speed in the beginning means trouble.

You won't see Sim Speed mentioned anywhere until the match actually starts. Meaning you can't tell before the game begins if someone in the lobby will slow you down. Turn down all the graphics settings beforehand just to be sure your rig can handle the game. Otherwise you will get some angry players.

It's actually not frustrating to play AGAINST new players. It's frustrating to play WITH new players because one weak link on a team can abesolutely lose it for you, no matter how awesome you are.

Don't listen to ShakeNBake's bitching about imbalance. For the most part the game is EXTREMELY balanced, espiecially compared to a lot of other games. However, there is a limited number of viable skill, item and favor builds (which is somewhat to be expected. A skill or item build you get with a random number generator should never be as good as one that you spend time thinking up). The biggest issue is actually the meta. Everyone plays 3v3 Cataract which is NOT a balanced map and really punishes certain demigods for it (Regulus gets it the worst). 4v4 Leviathan is the most balanced in terms of the number of competitive demigods and power tiers, in my opinion. Even if Pacov disagrees with me D:

I suggest getting about 25 games under your belt (they can be newb games) then trying to jump onto lagwars. At that point you will still have a lot to learn but at least you'll have the basic knowledge of the game so that you aren't a huge liability to the team.

kk, thank again for all the good insight. I have more questions, I purchased the game and have been playing for two days trouble is I dont see nearly the amount of online players that was mentioned above.

Wednesday and Thursday night EST 9:00pm onwards on both nights I have seen only 2 games being hosted, thats 2 games with about 6 players???? Am I doing something wrong????

The number of online players just measures how many people have the impulse program open, the actual number is much smaller. There are very few people playing, it can be hard to find a game sometimes.

check the link i posted in reply #2.  It shows current open games and current games in progress.  That will give you an idea of what's really going on.  For your part, you are probably still best servered to just host XvX Noob only games and see what ya get.  The most typical size of pick up games (PUGs) are 3v3, generally on cataract.

I play Tues-Thurs and if I'm playing, I'm on lagwars. Look me up those days and I'd be happy to play wif ya :D
