Proxy Servers still not allowing smooth international games

I'm not sure why this would be the case exactly but a ping of 300-400 on Demigod results in a choppy and needless to say, unplayable experience. I find this odd as at these pings, games of L4D, CoH, DoW2, RA3, WC3 and WOW all run smoothly. Hailing from Singapore, I'm used to these ping rates (can't be helped due to distance from the servers) but it is a bit disappointing that all other multiplayer experiences have been enjoyable except for Demigod which like L4D was created mostly for multiplayer.

Being in Asia, one can expect the numbers of a local community for any particular game (except for the most popular of games) to be low. A decent multiplayer experience would therefore require us to connect to the international community. Of course this would be fine if we could join the Australia (closest community in the region) Demigod players but while most connections are fine (<200 ping), there is the odd Australian connection that refuses to drop below 400, thus slowing everyone down to a choppy, unplayable state. This post is therefore to understand why a ping of 400+ makes Demigod choppy to the point of being unplayable when it doesn't seem to hinder all other multiplayer games.

I know that most of the pressing connectivity issues have already been solved with the last patch but if anyone knows why the above is happening and if there is an implementable solution, if would be a huge benefit to the game as it would also consolidate the currently fairly small player base that Demigod has, thus allowing players from Australia, Europe and the US to play with each other and increase the enjoyment of the Demigod community as a whole. It would be a shame to have a great system and such an addictive game to go to waste due to international connectivity problems.

Cheers,

Well its due to some delay.. for example the game is capped I think at 350 ms response. That mean when you ask your character to do a skill, even if all player inside ping less than 100ms, it will take 350ms to do the skill.

(This do not apply in lan games I think the capping is lower if any).

What those guys at gpg should have done, is implementing a system that will aotumatically adjust this 350ms setting to thebest number according to the players pings.

But there are other problem than that too... there are player with such a sucky upload speed thats its not even a ping problem...

Hope it help clarifying a bit.

And sorry for my crappy english

The speed of light isn't fast enough to allow for a truly quality international gaming experience period.  Sorry.

Thanks for the explanation Wagnard.

As for sly, i think we'll both agree that a smooth game on demigod in comparison to all other multiplayer games is good enough thank you. A quality gaming experience would firstly, too much to ask for and secondly, relative to everyone.

As has been remarked in another thread, ping is probably not reliable enough to tell if you are going to have a choppy game. My upload speed is ok, and the pings looked fine - yet choppygame , every time. Actually, I can live with that.  But also, I had a few other annoyances that *sometimes* happen in SP as well, like the character losing focus. Having that happen every other mouseclick in MP is game over.

System messages you have to click away every few seconds, and just won't go away? Not for me, sorry.

I didn't ragequit. I calmly uninstalled the program, TBH. I'll wait until they come up with some extra content/fix this. Laterz.

You must be joking about L4D, once ping breaches 300 in it zombies start to freeze up and teleport.

I think whoever is distributing Demigod in the Asian region should promote it in some way.

thing abt L4D is that it hardly ever goes to 300+ ping even in a game with 2 singaporean and 2 european players.

Played a game last night with aussies and singaporeans -wwhich is usually fine latency wise and despite fairly good pings, it was choppy as hell due to one person being proxied.
