PC and Laptop

Compaq/HP

I have a Compaq PC with 4 GB ram, and 2 internal HDs, 1 is a 200GB, the other is an 80GB. The first is sata, the second, IDE. 2 External HDs, 1 is a 320 GB and the other is 1 TB. A 1GB nVidia graphics card. This is hooked into a 26" HDTV for a monitor. AMD Athlon Processor  LE 1640 2.70 GHz

I also have a Compaq laptop with 2.5 GB ram, 80 GB HD, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor TK-53 1.70 GHz

Both are less than 6 months old. Both running Vista Home Premium.

Neither will wake from sleep mode. I have to perform a hard boot in order to wake them. They both seem to wake, all except for the monitors. Lights and fans run, but all I get is a black screen.

Where's the duck?

Do both have Vista SP1 installed? There was a fix for this in SP1.

I've been putting my new Vista computer in sleep mode but I turn off the monitor.  In the morning I turn on the monitor and then hit a key and it all comes back to life.  Oh, and running SP1 and 64 bit.

Jim,there is a huge amount of entries in the HP forums about this. I didn't wade through them but I got you a link. You are not alone.  LINK

I have a Dell computer and they have talked about this issue on their forums. Before I received my computer I went on line to see what issues some were having. I don't use sleep mode...not sure what is causing this issue but it happens on more than your compaq.

Good luck!

Have you created any page-file in hard-disk? This is required to wake from hibernation.

Create a page-file(virtual memory) on C (installation) drive which size at least equal to actual memory(ram) + 1 mb.

But the recommended size is 1.5x of ram.

That is 6 GB for pc and 3.75 GB for laptop. (if u dont have that much of space left u may set it to 4097 mb and 2561mb respectively)

Keep the Initial Size and Maximum Size same for best performance.

I feel there is nothing to do with sp1 with this.

 Just go to the Control Panel, Power options, click on change plan settings, then on change advanced power settings, now navigate to Sleep and select never for both options- on batteryand on power.

Now whenever you wanna use sleep mode, just press function+sleep button from the keyboard, and it would retrieve back by pressing any key.

Hope this helps you coz it worked for me on a friend's HP dv6000 notebook running Vista HomePremium who was having da same prob.

I always make sure hibernation is turned off.

Apart from being useless, the file it creates, hiberfil.sys, grows like Topsy.
