AOL Webpage Opening Problems

Ok, so I know the title is sort of an oxy-moron and first off I don't want anyone preaching how AOL sucks. I use it. Get over it. Anyway on to the problem, my Norton Antivirus subscription renewal is coming up (same goes for Norton comments) and I click the button which will bring me to the webpage where I renew it. Only problem is it opens in AOL and AOL doesn't really like being froced open to see a webpage so I get an error and can't open the page. How can I change the browser the page will open in? I've tried changing the settings in the control panel and other stuff like that and it doesn't work. Any ideas? And please don't say get rid of AOL, we already went over that.

(there isn't a '-' in oxymoron.  In fact, it isn't even supposed to be pronounced 'oxy*moron' it was originally pronounced oxym*o*ron, so "moron' wasn't heard at all.  But modern times and failure to check dictionaries has caused 'oxy*moron' to be an excepted.   This is a kinda hybrid pronunciation in that you can still hear some emphisis like 'ox'*'y'*'mor', rather than 'o'*'xym'*'or', but I'm splitting hairs at this point.   /lecture)

Yeah, I'm not sure what to tell you.  I didn't even know AOL still supported their own browser (though I think its just an IE skin now).     So, can we talk about removing norton if we arn't allowed to talk about removing AOL?    if your subscription is coming to an end, upgrade to panda or AVG or something.   Norton I've found to be the least effective at catching malware, but the worst system hog after mcafee (who at least is able to block something for all the system resources being hogged)

I see you chose to shoot yourself in both feet. The left foot by using AOL's browser, and the right foot by using Norton. You're not alone in having a hole in your right foot, I'm in the same boat although the new 2009 version is quite good.

Anyway, all you need to do is use AOL's browser to dial in to get onto the Internet (assuming you use their dial-up service). However, you can use any browser afterwards to actually do the surfing. I agree with Brickhead in using Firefox for surfing the web, and Opera does well also.

it is not I/we who have to get over it, it is you.

if you know then I have to ask why? are you a glutten for punishment?

I'm not bashing either product, rather simply try to open others eyes to a different/better way.

ANYONE WHO KEPT AOL PAST THE POINT WHERE THEY DID'T ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO ANYMORE IS AN IDIOT, AND YOU'RE AWARE THAT YOU'RE AN IDIOT, WHICH MAKES ME HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU. YOU DO NOT DESERVE THE INTERNET.

YOU DESERVE TO LIVE UNDER A ROCK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

/end rant

Yes, the above was an attempt to help you. WAKE UP. AOL should not exist anymore, and maybe you shouldn't either!

/end rant, really.

If you're getting an error why not use Internet Explorer. It's built into every windows system. Copy the link and paste it into the internet explorer address bar. I'm assuming you know how to do this, and you know about Internet Explorer, butt, then again, that may be assuming too much.

you peeps are harsh... granted AOL and Nortons are (ugh.... to putting it lightly) are not the greatest things around.

However Unit_1004, they have given some good advice as to the ways you can 'work around' your problem.

(and please do take careful consideration in reconsidering your choice of browser and av)

*nods to nimbin*   he did politely ask us not to badger him about using AOL, and he obviously has heard it before.

I don't think having loyalty to one of the was-leading edge companies in the interenet (back in the 90s, AOL made many advances to try to make the net a more people friendly place) is something worth calling another person an idiot.   I mean, I'd agree that AOL is something really not worth running any more, but its not like its hurting anybody*

* = (well, aol used a spinning vortex as a logo in early days because while it was evil, it was also lawful.  It was forced by its own nature to warn us of what it was doing, which was using the souls of its users to open a gateway to hell.   The AOL 7.0 commersial showed flashing colors and people appearing to let us know that the vortex had opened enough that devils and demons could start flooding out.  After 8.0, the logo showed tho now stable portal with the 3 nodes that kept it open. Its true that AOL is evil and bent on world domination )

I guess i should have put some sort of smiley. Not that i was kidding, just that it would have avoided ridicule of my ridicule. I was a pretty damn smart 12yearold tho just fyi. I probly wouldn't have gotten to mad at 12 considering I was using AOL at that age..I think i switched when i was 13. Not even kidding. High Speed FTW.

Well guys, thanks for something (kind of). The problem isn't browsing the web, its that when I click the renewal button in Norton it automatically opens AOL not me.  Also, there is no visible link to copy As for the grammer Nazi, I know how to spell oxymoron, I had 10 hours  of sleep in the past 48 hours when I wrote it. And as for CommanderAdama for me AOL is essentially programmed into the way I use the internet. I've used it since I was at least five years old which is longer than I've known how to write my name. Asking me to stop using it is like asking someone to start writing with their left hand even though their right hand is still fully useable. Thanks douchebag. And blackcurtain, why should I get over it? I have no real problems with using it and you guys are the ones making it in to a big deal. Why should you care what browser and antivirus I use? The truth is, you shouldn't.

It's not usable if it doesn't do what you need it to do,imo.

Have you tried contacting Norton by other means, such as a landline phone or on another computer? Perhaps they can assist you.

While I admit some replies haven't been very helpful, there is no need to resort to name-calling.I am assuming we are all adults here.

AOL is set as your default browser.

Have you tried Firefox Unit_1004? If not, give it a shot, all the cool people use it! ;) If you do, during the install you'll have a choice to import all your bookmarks, cookies, and what not from aol. I ditched aol a few years back for the fox and I kicked myself for not switching sooner!  :fox:

My actual right hand can't play a Mozart Piano concerto but that doesn't mean I'll get rid of it. As for the default browser, I set Firefox to the default under the Default Programs panel and Norton still doesn't want to comply.

I couldn't care less what browers, ISP, or AV/Sec software you use.

I simply learned a LOOOOOOOONG time ago, (probably about the time you started using AOL) that both are junk.

Norton is full of headaches, my case in point sounds like Norton is the cause of your current headache.

By all means if you want to deal with headaches, feel free to use what you want. When people say things like certain software sucks it is only because we have learned from experience and are passing that info on.

good luck

I write left handed but use a mouse right handed.  My father can't figure out for the life of him how I did it :D. With enough practice, yes you can change hands.

It's not that you can't "reprogram" yourself - you simply don't want to because it means a transition time that will temporarily affect your performance.

I have no real problems with using it and you guys are the ones making it in to a big deal.

You are having problems using Norton with AOL. Is that statement correct?

Why should you care what browser and antivirus I use?

You came here with a problem that needed solving.

The solution is to use software that is compatible.

Is that so unusual? I'm left-handed, but I absolutely can't use a left-handed mouse and I tried out of curiosity.

Same here, I write left handed but everything else I do is right handed.

And yes...like everyone else here...through my 10 years of computing experience...AOL and Norton (together OR separate) are complete and utter FAIL.

Probably not; once you're used to something it seems pretty narural.

I can't use my father's left heanded mouse without spending some major time retraining.  I've tried myself, and it's pretty useless to me right now.

But it's still possible, I think.  If you force yourself to use it every day, I'm sure you'd get used to it in a couple weeks.  Changing something that has essentially become musle memory is very hard, but possible.

I won't deny it's very difficult, though.  This is the kind of thing that kept QWERTY popular even though for a short period of time there was some push for Dvoark.  I had serious thoughts about going to Dvoark, but it never caught on and I abandoned the idea as it became obvious that it will never catch on.  Most people, especially QWERTY touch typers, have it so deep into their muscle memory that it would probably take over a month to get their speed back up with the new layout.  Most people aren't willing to take such a gigantic leap for soemthing as simple as a keyboard.

It took me a week or two to get used to my slim keyboard after having used those big gigantic key ones, and now I can't go back to the big clunky ones (plus the slim keys just look so much more sleek).

You have AOL as default browser. Undo that. Make IE your default, or Firefox. Whatever you use. I, too, use AOHell and I am certain that is the problem. Open AOL, go to settings, aol as default, uncheck. Voila! Problem solved. As far as AOL remarks, I get them all the time. You get used to it. I have used AOL for a long time and I have no problems with it. I don't need it. It is not my net provider. I just like it. Those who bash it usually just don't know how to use it...lol.  O:)

That isn't good enough. You will have to turn off AOL as Default in order to be successful. AOL don't give up easy.
