[Solved] Supreme Commander sound / audio problem

I thought I would post here to pass along a bit of info I've gained researching problems with audio in Supreme Commander.  The support forum at GPG provided some help, but a lot of the posts had solutions all over, so I wanted to post my issue and resolution:

Problem: When playing Supreme Commander, there is no sound at all- not during the intro screen and none anywhere else

Solution(s):

  • The fix for me was downloading the DirectX Redistributable-

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

I found this odd, because the redistributable was for DirectX 9, and since I was running Vista that shouldn't be needed, right?  Wrong.  If anyone has an explanation, I'd love to hear it.

  • The other major common problem is that if you have your sound settings for something other than 2.1 or Stereo (so 5.1 or 7.1 for instance), that can cause a lack of sound, too.  Changing it to Stereo sound in the Control Panel should fix that.  I didn't have this problem, but thought I would pass along the quick fix.

Hope this helps anyone else frustrated by the lack of sound.  Now I can try playing the game!

I have the same problem, no sound anywhere in the game including the intros. I tried both of the fixes mentioned with no success. I should mention, however, that during installation I got an error for a cyclic redundancy check on a file called data2.cab. It said it was a sound related file. I went online and downloaded the file, and then the installation finished just fine. Unfortunately, there is still no sound.

From my understanding, a CRC check can be caused by anti-virus software or a hard drive problem.  I know there have been issues in the past with people downloading Supreme Commander because of how massive it is.  You might try right-clicking on the program and choosing the Verify Installation option and see if that helps.  Also, try updating your sound card drivers and running a Windows Update.

This may not be available for SupCom, as it's a 3rd party title.

Currently it's not available for ANY app, SD or otherwise. The verify installation option is no longer possible with Impulse. :thumbsdown: I don't know when it was removed but could someone please put it back.

You're right, Wizard1956!  It was in Build 1304 of Impulse (3.23.454), but after I just updated it's no longer available.  What happened?  This seems like it would be a pretty useful option, especially with huge downloads like SupCom.  Otherwise, I guess you would have to uninstall and re-install it again?

Shift and Right Click.  This got changed without anyone saying anything (even caught me off guard).

Any chance it will be added back to a menu option instead?  That's not terribly intuitive.  And why was it hidden?

Probably not, it was hidden because people used it way to often when they really shouldn't have, and it was beginning to do more harm than good. By making it shift+click we can make it easily accessible without being the default jerk reaction to issues with software installs.
