My Impressions of Sins

Now, I know that many people have come on here with relatively poor remarks of Sins, and usually I can deduce they aren't big Strategy gamers. Anyone who loves a strategy game could at least find Sins somewhat enjoyable - lucky for me I find it very enjoyable.

Pretty much everything about the game is very good, except for a few minor qualms. I'd like to make a few notes to the developers about some of the choices they've made, and why I feel some changes are in order.

While the graphics are fairly nice, the ships themselves seem a bit dull. When I looked at some of my TEC ships they appeared to simply be geometric figures glued together and painted over with gray on more gray. I thought back to my Homeworld 2 days and how each ship had a very distinct and wonderfully charming characteristic about it. The ship itself was bright and vivid; easily identifyable to the eye without having to squint to see exactly what it is. I know you can hold your mouse over it to see the ship type, but that takes away some of the immersion. Part of a strategy game is enjoying what you have created, which brings me to my next point.

I believe some of the asteroids or planets are a little underscaled in comparison to the ships, although the ships feel rather tiny now anyway. Sometimes I wish things were blown up just a bit; made things a bit easier to the eye. A friend of mine made the comment that he loved the ships, but just wish he was able to see more of them. This is not a hugely important part of the game, but it would definately help.

^_^

One last thing (I do not have many complaints); I believe the cat and mouse AI you have is rather annoying. By the end of a game with an AI, basically it is me chasing him with a superior fleet he could not dream of counter-attacking. While this may seem like something logical to do (I've read some of the responses) it does not seem like a tactical thing to do in every case. If you were significantly outgunned it would be reasonable, but if they are even a little weaker I believe tactically it would be wise to try and use hit and run tactics to soften up the enemy while they advance. If you whittle away at someone as they attack, they will eventually lose momentum and be forced to either rebuild their forces or retreat. Continuing to run simply means you are allowing them more ground bit by bit.

Also, sometimes I find the AI doesn't realize its own strength when it comes to its forces. I've seen ships that made me gulp when I warped in, only to sigh in disapointment when the AI turned around and just left. The colony is mine, no fight necessary. Often times I have not even fought the AI until I reached their home planet - those kinds of games are boring.

I know many believe I should just drop the single player aspect and jump into multiplayer. While this is a reasonable argument, I know my skills are nowhere near that of an Ironclad Online player. I have never been very good at fighting other players since I often have no 'rushing' skills. While I may consider this once I become more comfortable with the game, I will for now settle with the AI and co-op matches with the Mrs.

I hope Ironclad or Stardock takes these suggestions to heart and thinks about it in their future 1.1 release! Cheers to a great game - I made my best friend and my girlfriend buy it not only because it is great, but also because of the Gamers Bill of Rights at the Gamers FIRST policy of customer service. Cheers!

Oh, and one more thing. Change the voices of the TEC ships. They sound like nerdy teenagers who are thrilled they are in a sci-fi setting.

"Got a job for me?! :D "

The big complaint I have with Sins is that while it does tactical battles and strategic planning, it doesn't do either deeply. In battles the player is restricted to focus firing and triggering special moves and there is no genuine tactical movements, while on the strategy side you only really build factories and pump out ships.

I'm new to the game myself , i would say most things i read are positive . All the reviews were , which is what made me buy the game . Bound to be some complaints , and these are usually from people who have played the game for 100+ hours then complain :) . Think it will definetly keep me going till empire:total war comes out .

Agree that some of the ships could do with sprucing up a bit , but im pretty sure the beta patch does that , i might be going mad but i swear some of them look alot better with the new patch . I came to the game expecting poor graphics so i was delighted with what i saw . I like that some TEC ships just look clunky and plain , suits there style.

Im getting more used to the ships being small , i love seeing tiny dots you can zoom into . I don't see how you can avoid small ships when you have over a thousand ships in a battle :) . If the ships and planets were to the same scale it would look silly , the planets would be absolutely massive . Plus having bigger planets means ships would have to be even smaller . I'm pretty sure theres a mod that makes the planets larger , as i think quite a few people feel the same way as you .

The AI does seem to have some weakness agreed , i think the AI is pretty decent though . I too have seen AI fleets that scared me but then retreated , i've only jsut started playing on hard but seems alot better than on normal. I think the AI retreats too much for sure , but i think this is the only game ive played were the AI does retreat when losing , i was impressed with that , maybe it will annoy me the more i play.

I havent played online yet myself , i am like you , not very good at rushing and speed clicking , and because the game is relatively new to me , i like to spend too much time watching the battles :) . I'm enjoying watching them too much to go online . I'm trying to talk my brother into buying it so i can play coop with him , your lucky you got the missus playing the game with you :)

Entrenchment will provide a number of new tactical defensive strategies :)

the asteroid size comment just gave me another suggestion: how about giving asteroid wells more variety in size of individual asteroids. iirc the colonisable asteroids have one big, 2 or 3 smaller ones and then a large number of really small ones. so, apart from maybe increasing the general amount, why not throw in a few more bigger ones. like half or quarter the size of those big ones in said grav wells. I'd say the general feel of such asteroid fiels is that they are a mix of bigger and smaller ones.

A lot of us have noted the issue with the AI's tendency for cowardice. Hopefully at some point there will be comething dont about it. I usually play with my friends and we like to do the big 5 on 5 games. Most of the time its not really possible with people because trying to get everyone on at the same time is a total nightmare

I do kinda wish there were more 8 and 10 player maps though.

I do agree the patch did improve the graphics alot. I was making the graphical viewing before the patch, and now that it's afterward it looks so much better!
