Mycolors ate my icons

So last night I decided to give MyColors a try. I downloaded the free Sins of a Solar Empire theme to check out the program with. All in all it worked well, did what it was supposed to do, etc. but I decided I didn't want to use it, so using MyColors I restored back to the Vista Default theme. I then went ahead and uninstalled the program. Today I noticed that some of my Icons didn't go back to the default Windows Icon, and are infact still the Sins icon. I can't get the icons to go back to the default because the proper default icon is now missing. If I go to manually changing the icons back manually the proper icon only shows as the "missing image" placeholder, if I tell it to restore back to the default icon it just gors back to the Sins icon. I dug through my HD and found that the folder containing all the MyColors icons was still hanging around so I deleted it, but even after a reboot some of my folders still show up with the Sins icon. No matter what I do I can't get the files in question to display with the proper icon and it's kinda peeving me off.

The icon in question is the "folder in a folder" icon that is used when a folder contains subfolders. Obviously this is a lot of my folders and it's aggravating that the proper default icon is missing and it insist on sticking with the Sins icon.  When I manually try and change the icon in the folder properties, the Sins icon isn't even an option, and the proper option just sows as the "image missing" placeholder.

Unless someone has a better idea -

I'm wondering if you re-booted after applying the Vista Default theme and before uninstalling MyColors. If not, you might try re-installing MyColors (letting it update itself to a more current version if it wants to). I'd reboot at that point, before applying any themes. Then I'd apply Sins Theme. Then I'd re-boot. Then I'd apply the Vista Default theme, then I'd re-boot and check the icons you're having trouble with. If you're good at that point I'd uninstall it, and yes you guessed it    reboot, and make sure you're still good. Then uninstall if you are good, if not, probably may as well leave MyColors installed at that point and send a ticket into Stardock Support.

No guarantees on this idea. And ya all the rebooting might seem a bit excessive but it does seem to solve some problems. And if you don't want to fool with all that, again unless someone else jumps in here with a better idea, here's the Stardock support link:

They're primarily Mon-Fri, so it will likely be a few days before they get back to you, but they will.

Thanks Bebi. If I can stray a little here, generally speaking is it ok to pull off emoticons and the little gif's I see floating around here and use them? I see a lot that I like, never pulled them down because I felt like it'd be hijacking. [I'm so socially challenged, sigh.]

Have you installed any other trials from us that are not currently uninstalled like WindowBlinds? If not be sure they are uninstalled. Likely though we might ahve to ask several questions so the best method here would be to contact us at support@stardock.com. If you have any specific questions please let me know.

Actually I somehow fixed the problem. Or it fixed itself. Or something. I tried rebooting and it did nothing, tried resetting defaults, clearing out any registry entries related to mycolors, etc. etc. Nothing worked. I came across a free prog. named winbubble that basically is just a gui front end for a bunch of registry hacks and adjustments and whatnot for Vista. One of the things it can do is load up some sort of file repair utility built into Vista that I had never seen or heard of before that runs out of the command prompt. I ran that and it said the file that contains all my icons was corrupt and couldn't be repaired. After that I decided to go ahead and run windows update. After the system updated, all my icons were correct even though when you go into the properties menu, the proper default icon is still missing and just shows the "image not found" thing; but the folders show the right icon now anyway? I would assume that's the corrruption that the utility was complaining about. Not sure if that prog. fixed the problem, or the update did it, or it just sorted itself out, but all is well now.

Oh and for the person that asked, I think I was able to get the free Sins package since I own SoaSE. It was in my available downloads when I first installed Impulse.

Do you happen to have the link to that program? I would like to look into this further.

MyColors ate my icons too. I fixed the problem and went back to XP icons using Microsoft's TweakUI program. Select 'Repair' in the list on the left, then select 'Repair Icons', click 'Repair Now'.

Everything is back the way it was wih the XP icons.

TweakUI is a Microsoft PowerToy. The link for it is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx

It didn't fix things completely though. I did find another program on CNet Download called IconTweaker (a freebie). It let me go back over the icons that were not restored and reset them to the XP icon. The link for it is http://www.download.com/IconTweaker/3000-2195_4-10483132.html

I was confused about saving the icons in Icon Tweaker. I had changed a bunch of them and they weren't reset when I changed them. However, when I exited the program, it asked me if I wanted to save and apply my changes. I said yes and everything is back the way it was.

I've been using Window Blinds since v3, and am using ObjectBar. I had saved my theme before installing MyColors, thinking that everything would be restored if I changed it back to my origonal setup if I did not like MyColors. Obviously I was wrong but the above programs did the job. I'll think twice about installing somethink like it again.

This same thing happened to me in Vista 64. Matter of fact, the same thing happened back when I used to use Iconpackager in XP. Stardock really sucks for changing icons, I don't know why but their programs can never properly revert changes made.

To add further, Stardock sucks as a whole. Now the program wont even uninstall ...

Thanks for taking my clean install and mucking it up. Time to format and never install another Stardock product again.
