Steps to turn "Earth Hour' into more then just an hour of helping Earth.

So people are planning on helping Earth, but only for an hour?

And then wondering where their thoughts have gone wrong.

Wanna help the Earth for more then one measly hour?  Follow these steps.

1.  Get cfl or led lights.  They may be expensive (well, the leds), but the energy savings will pay back over the next year or two, then you'll make money.

2.  Get energy efficient appliances.  A new 21 seer air conditioner would save 50% energy over your old 12 seer.

3.  Hang your clothes outside.  A dryer takes up tons of power for what you could let the sun do.

4.  Microwave.  Yes, the oven tastes better, the oven also uses 3000 watts, and takes 20-40 minutes to cook, while a microwave takes as low as 600 watts and cooks in minutes.

5.  Turn off things when not in use.  Not using that computer?  Turn it off.  That 500 watt pc will save 500 watts per sec every time it's off.

6.  Get an energy efficient car.  Don't like gas prices?  Their because people didn't care about the environment.  Go buy something AT LEAST 30 mpg.

Anyone wants to add stuff, please do.

Good luck cooking a turkey in the microwave. There are some things that have to be done in the oven, they can't be done in the microwave. Like baking. An oven cooks the outside, makes things crispy, whereas a microwave cooks the inside and can make things soggy.

For my part I'll turn off Foxnews for 5 mins a day. :)

½ hr in the microwave and ½ hour at 200°C works great for a 4lbs chicken. You could scale that up for a turkey  ;)

1) Air conditioner? Just move to a cooler country. We don't need no steenkin air conditioner...

2) Heating - do away with it. If you had Bebi in the house she is so hot you wouldn't need any heating... ;p

Well hell. If saving fuel is helping the earth, then my lead foot getting me enough tickets to lose my license for a year and a half is already forcing me to do my part.

If it's not about saving the earth, think of getting energy efficient things as a way to NOT PAY OUT THE ASS FOR EVERYTHING.

Then you'll have more money to buy what you want, which for men generally turns out to be dvds, more powerful computers, beer?
You may think, LOL, Zelio, I'd be paying mostly for these new appliances...

Imagine if our depression gets worse... All you'll be paying for is your energy :\.

Do this for the environment. Or yourself. Just do it.

Earth Hour should be called "First World Hour!" Let me tell you how the Third World lives (Egypt, China, India to name a few). Switch off our local power for an hour and you'll
find muttering, grumbling and possible rioting (especially when football is on the telly).

Seriously, the Third World pollutes the most(Cairo ranks in top twenty cities for pollution), and until the World starts to educate us we're not climate change/earth warming/ iceberg falling worriers. Heck, in Cairo, non-smokers are second class.

I do see the need to feel worried about climate change and everyone doing their bit is responsible and encouraging but, really, there is a lot to do. In Cairo we have twenty thousand taxis and 50% are over 40 (yes, 40 years old).In the rest of Africa millions of wood fires are burning every day for cooking and heating in Winter. In my local supermarket there are 3 energy saving bulbs for every fifty normal ones sold. And, in summer, we run enough aircons in Cairo to power a Saturn rocket (and more!).

You see, until the word gets out to the farthest corners of the Earth, it is nice to do your bit for energy saving, but, unfortunately, putting an energy saver bulb in the old socket does not save the ozone above London or LA or NY. Until you educate the planet, you're doing very little.

As I said, you cannot ignore the problem and it's good to feel civic minded. Put the fires out in India, Africa, China et al and you would see a significant improvement.

Actually, if you'll look around on the 'net, you see that America has the largest carbon footprint out of all the countries, first- or third-world. That's very sad, but our current president pretty much refuses to acknowledge the existance of global warming. Look at the Kyoto Protocol, a UN agreement to reduce carbon emissions. 137 developing countries have ratified it.....America won't.

I beg to differ there.....some of us care deeply about the environment.....what is it they call us...tree huggers or something like that. And gas prices are up because George bush think he's some warrior of God and is going to rid the world of evil buy spending "Trillions" of our dollars...money that could be better spent here...on a senseless invasion of some third world country...a job he'd accomplish much quicker and cheaper if he just put a gun to his head or choked on a bag of pretzels.

Honestly...I hope this country goes into a big time recession and Wall street takes a huge dive. I'd paint targets on the sidewalks for them to hit when they dove out the windows. Maybe then apathetic people in this country will wake the hell up and stop allowing idiots to run this country....but I doubt it. They elect presidents in this country for all the wrong reasons. But what can you expect from people that actually think "reality" tv is actually reality.

Wanna do something to help the environment?...get involved online...there are tons of avtive online environmental groups that actually make a difference...as long as you don't mind being branded a tree hugger.

Point - cut down save money - oh ya! ok
While the guy your buying stuff from charges you more to do so and behind it all...
What does he do with it? Cut down save energy - save the planet?

Hell no - he is out there buying everything he needs to use more energy to make more money and sell you more stuff to make him more money. Plus who is he supporting with all that money he is spending to do so?

Go figure... You can figure how to save yourself money doing things to save whatever energy you can.
But in the long run it aint gona happen. People have been using cheap ways to save money on stuff since the 60's or even sooner than that. It is the way we are... cheaper is better... really I never knew that.
Well you do now with all this enlightenment of how to do whatever to cut down on energy. But we have been doing that already and so far all we get is a lower bill. That and spend more money trying to save more and get rebates from the government and all that stuff too.

It's a no bill deal man... do whatever it takes for now and next year what is it gona be? Samething same story! Nothing changed - it just got worse is all for we are still using too much. That and more people are being born everyday and more of us are using more energy everyday too.

People get rich with these ideas and it goes one place... in their pockets.
You wana save the planet - then get off the damn thing - next shuttle leaves asap all aboard..!

We can put a man on the moon and we can do just about whatever we want in space - but I'll be damned if we are gona save this planet. Man just had a real problem and it aint no easy one to figure out. We can do anything says some people today. But man is not gona have the answer for saving his own world. For one - it is not ours to fix. We figure we are in control of everything. Then fix the damn weather first and stop putting money in peoples hands to fix something they can't fix.

Ya I like saving money... everyone does... it is the american way of doing things. But there is a lot of people that have a lot of money and they sure are not getting into saving money by cutting down on energy. Fact is they are spending more money to get what they want to use more energy. Bigger is better they ole saying goes... But like it says bigger is just what it is bigger and uses more energy. Thus that is what is truly going on while the rest do the little things which don't really matter.

The true fix is gona come from the true owner of this here planet.
Oh and He does not want your money either!

Rather than heat the whole house when I'm the only one home, I use a portable oil filled heater to heat the room I'm in, which is usually my upstairs office. In the summer, I work downstairs where it's about 5 degrees cooler and I only turn on the AC when it gets above 80 degrees. Otherwise, I just use a fan.
