Show off your ship designs 2008!

I designed a ship in my current sandbox game, which is the first ship I'd like to post on the forums. It's the first ship I've designed to look completely unrelated to it's base hull. It does not use KHSM(making it fully metaverse-legal), and in fact uses only 5 extras. It's a Terran medium hull which represents what I imagine us humans to actually make space warships look like when we eventually have to militarize space(against aliens or against ourselves) - water-based ships. Although I actually expect humans to make space warships which resemble submarines, I couldn't put together a decent looking submarine design, so I made the medium hull 'Katana-Class' hunter-killer surveyor instead.

Of course, the ship was designed in 2008, so I'm not going to put it in last year's thread. Feel free to put your more recent ship designs here.

It's a DA ship, which is too bad. If I had TA, with it's rotating parts, the front turret could have actually been made to spin. (:(

Details: The ship design isn't a warship of the line. No, that role would of course be taken by huge hulls. This thing is designed to speed around killing freighters, constructors, starbases, transports, small fighters, flagships, etc. in times of war. Of course, everyone in my present game(at the time when the design was created) was either allied to me, part of my empire(culturally conquered), or allied to me and undergoing a peaceful integration into my empire. In fact, I hadn't yet invaded any planet at all, though I had flipped about 60% of the the galaxy. So far, the Iconians, Korx, Altarians, Yor, Torians and Exploitrons have all fallen in this manner. This leaves only the Drengin and Thalan independent, protected for now by a freak 'native cultural power' event.

But every time an evil empire finally gave in to my culture, their warships would go astray as pirates, with no fleets and no bonuses supporting them. This threatened slow-moving constructors and space miners working in the region, and called for a ship to mop up the pirates. So I upgraded my aging, obsolete, neglected Terran Alliance Flagship, which had eventually given up it's survey duties to smaller, zippier ships and was lying unnoticed in the orbit of Iconia 5. These smaller ships were now outclassed by the Katana and retired to picket duties.

The ol' Flagship already had the anomaly plating, HP-booster techs, and Xinathium required to kill any pirate-ized frigate using the tie-rule exploit, and with a bit of experience and another layer of anomaly plating, it could kill off a pirate battleship using the same exploit.

It's so far done it's anti-pirate duties as expected, and though it will probably never make up for it's upgrade costs, it's already paid off several years worth of maintenance with 1000 bc and 250 bc anomalies. No ships of the Katana class were actually ever built, with only my flagship's upgrading and renaming taking place. The new name was derived from Douglas Adams' Life, The Universe and Everything:

"But while these spaceships, and other great ones come to mind, such as the Galactic Fleet Battleships-the GSS Daring, the GSS Audacity and the GSS Suicidal Insanity-are all spoken of with awe, pride, enthusiasm, affection, admiration, regret, jealousy, resentment, in fact..."

Here's a couple of my 08 designs, ranging from Planetary Defense Platforms to Tiny Hulls

Starting with the big guns, my base level PDP, the Orion. First built on Mother Arcea to defend against the hostile galaxy, the Orion class Small Planetary Defense Platform has two main Capital weapons grade batteries with a full plane of movement (TA rotating parts), as well as four supplementary rotating Fighter weapons grade batteries at 90 degree intervals around the central ring. Later model Orion's were fitted with HP boosters, before being phased out in favor of larger instillations.

Lord Vega's premier Frigate class vessel is the Ronin Class Heavy Frigate. Inspired by the Katana class wide bodied Frigate of Terran Emperor PeskyFly the Ronin lives up to its namesake, the roving Japanese Samurai mercenaries of the old Earth, being perfectly suited to either individual or fleet combat. The Ronin has two Capital weapons grade quad-batteries with full movement for inter ship combat as well as two rear mounted Fighter weapons grade batteries to defend the rear accessed hanger, which holds a compliment of one squadron of one man fighters.

The final addition to the 08 list (for now) is the Stealth rated Tiny Hull Reconnaissance/Dignitary Shuttle/Joy Craft/Fighter the Shadow. The Shadow makes use of recessed module ports to mount surveillance modules without sticking up as odd angled surfaces for radar and light waves to bounce off, a new engine manifold stylishly shrouds the engine recess blocking it from view from most angles, while directing the flow of energy produced by the engines to enhance both the speed of the craft and its stealth aspects. Lord Vega keeps one in his hanger as his personal vessel, while the other four produced are all used on super secret Special Forces Operations.

Here's 2 more I got...

The F-6E Raven

And a lousy attempt to emulate Kenwebb's/BingJack's/etc. method of "tiling" the same jewelry piece to shape the hull. I realized after about an hour of work that my hull was "tiny" :( and I sorta got tired of messing with it so I just slapped some "wings" on and took a pic. Anyways...

I also noticed that I had so many pieces of jewelry that the ship started to take up too much memory, and parts of it were disappearing :P Oh well. My next attempt will be better ;)

Loving the Space Cannon Jiggy, that thing is sweet! That F-6E Raven is quite awesome too, I love the bulky-yet-sleek approach their, giving it the meat to have space on it and be big enough to be an actual ship, and yet its still sleek and look absolutely lethal! :D

Is that was causes that phenom? I hadn't played in a awhile and one day I fired up a quick game and noticed all but one of my ships were nothing but glitches and fragments.

I figured, in my absence of playing, an update or two had invalidated my designs.

Is there a hard Peice # limit? IF so, what is it?

thanks very much Fate! :)

@denyasis - well, its at least one of the reasons that happens. I notice sometimes as well, just starting a new design, that some of the pieces are missing a side. But yeah, on that alligator-lookin thing I made, I started removing some stuff off it and the pieces that were missing reappeared. My guess is it had close to 150 pieces.

a little of both, denyasis. they updated the way ships are rendered, and i think now they have a max poly count or something along those lines. same thing happened to me, a couple old ship designs i was really proud of went *FFTFTFTFTFTFTT*

I have noticed that as the game progresses, memory issues affect the jewelery and the textures. IN one example - all of the textures for the jewelery disappeared, leaving lots of hard point indicators flying in empty space.

aah thats whats cause the glitches - have the same Problem on my bigger Ships (on my Large Hull when i add Weapons and more Stuff - on the Huge one i scratch the Limit without any functional Parts)
that really starts to piss me off - now i have build myself some fine looking Ships and cannot use them in Combat because as i put Weapons on them they look like low Resolution Pieces of Junk

anyway Jiggy keep going with your Practicing Ship, its is a Blast - a little bit to Dark for my Taste, but good Shape and Look

@ General Homsar - i have found a Name finaly ,since my Species are not Agressive by Nature and are a Group of Species with the same Origin (much like the Xindi from Enterprise)
I will call them the 5 Tallons Coalition

looking forward to seeing what you can add in TA

First post here, just some Terran Alliance fighter designs. Hope you guys like em.
F-217 Skyfire - advanced tactical fighter (small hull)
F-109 Loki - interceptor fighter (tiny hull)

Nice Echo, I love how you've managed to get the two ships to look almost exactly the same, although it confused the fark out of me looking at them both and them being the same!!
sorry for the confusion, didnt realize the degree of similarity. I just wanted them to look like they were of the same species. Here is an updated version of the Loki, I tried to make it look more like the Macross VF-1 Valkyrie.

This is from my current game as my custom race the "Solecians" using Iconian style ships:

Its a raider design called the "Wasp." Its a small hull, 8/8 hp, 5 man crew, and its currently fighting a civ using missiles and armor, so it's armed with a Plasma II beam (just below those bug eyes) and uses ECM III defenses (can't remember if it has two ECM pods or just one). It's fast and has good range, so it can go into enemy space and destroy mining and asteroid bases as well as starbases and trade ships. When in packs they can defeat enemy capitol ships with ease. I really like the design, both in the way it looks as well as how it functions. I could almost win a war with enough of these things, and they're pretty cheap.

I'll post more of my ships later probably.

One of the first ships I made. At this point I had no idea that you could resize the components, so here's a ship with components all at default size.

I'm currently working on a much bigger design with just about everything resized. After I discovered the slider size tool thingy I went totally crazy with it.

Hey guys,

Im always impressed with the creativity of this community and figured it was time to post some of my own stuff. Anyways, here a copy of a Destroyer class ship ive built for one of my recent games. If you like it ill upload more of my ships but at this point prnt screening images is tedious and im lazy:P.

Enjoy

I'm currently playing a game in a gigantic galaxy with full races. I spawn next to the Altariens (sp?) and had a few wras with them before the Drath Legion, my allies, destroyed them. Here is my main ship design that kept me alive:

The "War Wolf." Its a medium hull design, and currently its armed with Photon torpedoes; you can see the tubes in the nose. This is one of my most favorites designs. It's natural, original, and has a bit of a Star Trek vibe about it.

Heres another design thats also used by my custom race:

This one is called the "Warhawk." You can see how it shares some features with the War Wolf. It is also a medium design.

Off-topic but hope someone can answer as I'm new to the game. Can I use the ships I've designed in Dreadlords in Dark Avatar and vice versa? Or is there any way to import them over? Great designs btw. Wish I had the creativity to design the above :0
