Still learning - how do I protect my shipping lanes?

Hi all - brand new to the game but am enjoying it.

So, everything was going fine and then there was a pirate event. Pirates began attacking my freighters. I wanted to find some way for my military ships to escort them but can't seem to figure it out.

Any tips?

Well, one way that will be 100% hands-free is to build the Galactic Privateer if it hasn't already been built. That will make your freighters unable to be damaged (dumb AI will still try to attack it though, wasting movement points). It's in one of the trade techs.

Barring that and a lucky UP voting for a Trade Federation to protect freighters....I'm not too certain how to pull it off without a ton of micromanagement.
