A new update for DA is avaible on SDC. I guess it is supposed to fix the crashing savegames bug. It does not seem to work with old saves.
A list of changes should be up soon.
EDIT: Here it is.

Thanks Stardock!

I wonder how they do that in between the TA betas. Frogboy must have "tied the developers to their desks".

I have to keep two copies of the code at once, and as I found the bugs in Twilight, I fixed them in Dark Avatar, and got the update up as soon as I could.

Question- why do the heightmaps change with every update?

Version refresh only. They aren't actually changed, so you don't need to bother updating them.

Okay kryo, if we don't bother updating them, then what happens if they eventually are updated beyond a version refresh?

It's not likely they will be, since they're just a bunch of RAW maps. And TA is using a different system that's much more efficient and won't need them anyway.

i know! i'm thinking once a few more AI players are available, i'll be ready to attemps an immense map--and be able to handle it on my computer! (which isn't super old, but it's no gaming rig).

however, i thought TA still used the heightmaps to determine where to place usable tiles? (and if that's the case, i've noticed their placement can be, er, a little odd at times - tiles ending up mostly or completely in ocean).

It uses a limited set of smaller ones for that purpose, but since they're linked with the textures, they're of necessity included in the game itself.
