crash fatal

hi afterdnloading and installing from scratch the sins again and getting the update, played it alot yesterday with no problems, but today i saved a game and when i came back to the game it was totally frozen and crashed,.. wouldnt even exit the game with the ctrl-alt-del keys.. mouse would move but nothing and i mean nothing was clickable.. so i rebooted and tried again, same thing.. think something is messed up in the new patch, never had any crashes at all playing the game since I got it except these now on this new patch. I have a p4 3.60 w 2gig on a 680i mobo, and a nvidia 8800 w 756ram and a audigy 4 sound card

Sometimes if it crashes really bad you won't see a dump message. Is there a minidump in the folder with the time/date of the crash? Also, try playing in windowed mode and see if any error messages come up. You might be able to skip through them to continue playing (you often won't see these in full screen mode).

I'm happy you are finding it more fun and hopefully we can get those crashes fixed for you soon.

Here is where you can find the minidumps:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

this has happened to me as well, I have sent the minidump file to minidump@ironcladgames.com. hopefully you find it useful. Something that I noticed that seems to connect all of my crashes is that something graphical changed just prior to each crash. These changes have been everything from special Fx to simply zooming out to the icon lvl quickly.

same thing happen to me when loading a saved game. the crash just freeze the game graphics and keyboard input (no ctrl-alt-del), though music and mouse cursor still work.
i can confirm the same and mailed a few minidumps

I'm getting a similar error too -- my game freezes, and the mouse / music works but nothing else in game does. My OS appears to be running uninterupted in the background, i just can't get at it with the game in the way. Hitting the "power" button shuts the computer down, and I can see that ctrl-alt-delete opened the task manager and stuff like that, but I just can't see through the game.

I'm not getting any minidumps, unfortunately, to send them in with. I do have a save game where it occurs consistently -- every time I try to load it.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Geforce 8800GTX (beta drivers for Bioshock)
2 Gigs DDR2 533 ram

I have DXDiag available for the asking.

I have had several crashs also. I play with the large galaxy and like to take my time. When i am in midgame with a lot of resources and a large fleet the game will just freeze. I was playing the game on a high end laptop and I had to unplug the laptop and the battery to shut down. This has happened with thw last three games with similiar conditions. When it froze and after shutting the computer off there was no dump file or anything. Have one of the dev play for 4 or 5 hours with a large galaxy and resources and it should freeze for themm also. I enjoy the game tho and will be glad when you find this bug

I've seen this too, no minidump, like Ron. Mine loads enough of the game so I can see the skybox and the phase lanes (with culture), but nothing else.

Huh. I just get into the game, at the super-zoomed-in field of view that doesn't really let you see anything.

Beta 2 never froze, but now beta3 consistently freezes on my machine, after playing for awhile, and while loading certain saves of games that had previously crashed. While soase seems hosed, my os is fine and I can kill off soase, reload the game, and have it freeze again.

Game loads full graphics and sound as others reported though I am running windows server 2003 x86. I too have the beta bioshock drivers from nvidia that *might* be an issue but I doubt it seeing how I can start a new game and it runs fine for awhile before freezing again.

dxdiag and save game available by request.

Mine starts off at showing my entire system (minus most of the stuff in it). Not the entire game, though, I'm in a 5 system game.

same thing happened to me just had to start from a previous autosave to get it to work.

BTW guys, while it doesn't prevent the problem from happening, you can avoid the need to reboot your computer by running in a window.

Oh, and I just discovered that I have multiple saves corrupted by this issue, in the same game. Dunno if thats significant, since I did have a save or two in the middle that weren't (from which I reloaded after I quit for the night or what have you).

I just did a little impromptu testing of this bug since my computer seemed to replicate it every time I played. I played on the same galaxy size (small) I have been, with the same AI's (3 Hard) and marauders, flagships, high resources, and bounty at start all on. The only two things that I changed were that I didn't change anything about the empire window (i.e. don't show enemy, allied planets), and i fielded one less cap ship than I had in the previous games (4 caps[kol, sova, akkan, dunov] as oppossed to 5 [had the Marza last time]). My game didn't crash at all and seemed to run more smoothly than ever before even with some rather large fleet battles and multiple battles at the same time.

Could either of these two differences be the problem or am I just crazy. I have no idea why the empire window or one more cap ship would cause a crash but they were the only things that were different this time. I also made sure that I had the same programs running in the background and my computer had been on for the same amount of time as it had for the other crashes.

I always minimize the empire window -- I never got the hang of using it very effectively. All I ever show in it are the stars themselves and my fleet numbers. How about the rest of you guys?

Edit: And I want this crash gone, like *now*! I just lost another game to it.

I've run into this over 10 times this weekend, I submitted a ticket and have been sending the smartex dumps and the dr watson dumps when they happen. I've got corrupt game saves also, load it and it goes to the initial game start screen but it's frozen there. I've found if you wait it out (game in full screen mode) you'll get a ctd in about 90 seconds and your pc back. For me, it also wipes out my desktop background, for some reason. Smartex has an empty .dmp file and a short .cra, so I guess it's not quite set for sins and dr watson only gets a dump file once in a while. It _seems_ to do it the majority of the time when zooming in and out, maybe 75%. I've got the latest nvidia drivers (xp) for bioshock, so they're beta but I haven't run into anything else (bioshock, the new moh demo, coh, gc2, fear or hl2)crashing. I haven't made through a whole game yet without crashing, but a recent save usually gets things back on track. I just forget not to zoom in or out in battles (or maybe many ships moving).

Oh, it seems to me that there are 2 different problems floating around (may be the same but with different symptoms):
1. A game and it's saves get corrupted and when you load the bad save it starts zoomed in and frozen, no ctd within my normal waiting time soI have to re-boot.
2. During a game, it freezes and ctd's after about 90 seconds(reminds me of the gc2 beta), but save games aren't corrupted and you can continue on from the last save. Looks like I'll have to turn autosave back on.

No common denominators for me, it does it with just 2 cap ships and smallish fleet 20 to 30 ships. Does seem to consistantly crash on zooms during battles.

Thats the one I have.

Thats the one I almost wish I had

Edit:

Stupid question. Has the save-game freeze occured on any autosaves? I haven't seen it there. I'm wondering if its linked to the (now seperate) stats files?
