So I finally won my first game of GalCiv2...

Now I'm going to sleep for a week.

Last night I finally completed a game, but I'm pretty sure it's only because I got lucky that I did so well. I played as the Thalans on a Huge map with Tech Trading turned off, no Mega Events, Abundant Habitable Planets, Planets, Stars, Scattered Stars, Normal Tech Speed, Random Minor Civilizations. The game threw me in with the Altarians, Arceans, Korx, Krynn, and Torians. There were two minor races but I never saw them. I think the AI killed them...

Ah, I forgot my abilities. I gave myself +25% Creativity, +20% Research, +20% Morale, and the Technologists was my party of choice.

Anyway, I ended up with 3 morale resources, 2 economic resources, 1 military resource, 4 technology resources, and 3 influence resources. Yes, I really put effort into getting these before the AI, and from now on I'll make that a priority. With 3 morale resources I had no need of any morale buildings whatsoever.

In the end, which took me 4 straight nights of gaming, and would have taken more if I hadn't just went for the Technological Victory... I had 120+ colonies and was making 7,000+ BC a week at 49% taxes. Every single planet had 2 farms and a potential 20 billion population. Most of my planets were specialized economy planets, raking in around 350-450 BC a week. I had 9 planets devoted to production and 6 to research, every one of them with fully loaded economic starbases for that sweet +96% bonus. I researched every technology before I went for the technological victory, which I did out of sheer exhaustion. I can't imagine how long this game would have lasted if I decided to just kill everyone. To be honest, I just didn't feel like playing anymore, and now I'm kind of sick of the game and need a break.

The AI did terrible. The Krynn got some sort of "event" that claimed they found a piece of an artifact that would make them more powerful each week, and that if I didn't take steps to erradicate them, I would one day be enslaved by them. They were #2, but... the AI was so far behind in technology, and was doing so poor economically... there was simply no way they could ever take me down. Every time they tried to colonize a planet in my ring of influence, I would absorb that planet the next week which, of course, got on my nerves after the 20th time. I simply had too many planets and the micromanagement got to be a living hell. I built some nice huge ships with 2 Doom Rays, 2 Black Hole Eruptors and 2 Black Hole something nor other, and 2 of every best defense. My military might went through the roof and the AI was too afraid to ever bother me, they only offered thousands of BC every once in a while, which I gladly accepted.

Looking at these AI planets with spies, I saw that they weren't very bright. A starport on every planet, a few manufacturing plants, the occasional farm or research building. What the hell? How could they hope to beat me?

Ah well. I dominated this last game, but I'm tired for now. I don't see how you guys do it, so often. That was a grueling test of patience, my wrist hurts from all the clicking, etc. I think I've had enough... unless I'm missing something. *shrug*

Try playing smaller maps/less habitable planets for less micromanagement. It sounds like you could do with going up to a higher difficulty as well- more challenge=more fun.

Allied Victory is also a good way to bring the game to an end if you're in such a dominant position. Ally with everyone you can, then stomp out the rest.

Hi!

Congratulations! It was not so hard as it seemed to you in your first posts!

There are some Speedy Gonzaleses, but most of us play quite slow - a game or two per month. So don't bother with the speed. The most important is you enjoy the game. Big games are rarely easy, and tend to drag long after you've practically won. Some call them epic, I call them grind. Seems you're in that class to. For real "epic" DA game try gigantic rare everything (~50 habitable planets). With nerfed engines ships' woyages will really take an epic time to finish...

Very good advice indeed!

From your description I'd say AI in your game was set to normal. IIRC at that settings it has some functions disabled, and gets only 75% from its economy. Since you've dominated them so obviously, and you got familiar with game mechanics, I'd suggest your next game be a small all abundant "tough" (full "brain", no bonuses) game with 6 clasic AIs: Drengin, Yor, Altarian, Torian, Arcean and Humans. Regen game until all races are spread in the galaxy evenly (each has access to about the same number of planets), and play.

Hm... yes, I did play with Normal difficulty. After the game was over, one of the AIs had their tax rate at 80%. I guess they had an even harder time not going broke than I did earlier. It does seem that colonizing a bunch of worlds solely for banks is the way to go. If the AI had gone for better banking techs, they probably would have done much better. Their tech was one step away from stock markets, but considering how long this game was... I think they waited too long.

6 other civs on a small map? Hm... I'll give that a try. After my brain stops sizzling, that is... heh. Seriously, I am having difficulty thinking straight. Am I even making sense? I can't tell...

The problem is that you played a game that was way too big. I´ve never played in a game that big. You have 120 colonies alone? That means the enemy had some of their own too. I never played a game that had 100 planets to be colonized to start with. I guess the maximum was about 70.

And normal is way too easy.

I don't think he started that big....my current game is gigantic abundant, there are 1000 planets already colonized at this point in the game, many still haven't been colonized (seriously).....

its definitely tedious, I have effectively won the game, but am probably about only a third of conquering the entire galaxy at this point....

well, its not a definite win, I might lose a few planets to the dregin, I have so many planets its hard to defend them all, but seriously, when you have so many, even if i lost a few I wouldn't even bat an eye.....

I control about half the influence in the game I believe currently, and in alliance with about half the NPC's. I started going for an alliance win being the Terrans, but doesn't seem like that is going to happen..Drengin are hating my influence, they had a specific funny term for it, cannot remember it though.......

I'm also playing normal, which obviously isn't difficult enough.....I really need to destroy more races, in war with two of them now, and winning handedly, they cannot even destroy a ship of mine....

I've been reading the forums alot, and next game will be on at least tough with AI option set on....and probably will not play abundant for next game, probably go large instead of huge, for variety....

I didn't realize I would be limited to 5 parsecs/week travel time when I started this gigantic map, abundant planets game up ;/

Yes I remeber my first victory. It was an allinace victory while I was playing the Humans. The settings were at normal difficulty, gigantic galaxy size, anomolies, number of stars, number of planets and number of habitable planets were all set at abundent and tech rate was at very fast. I played aganist the Yor, Drengin, Altarians, Torians, Korx, Drath, Thalans, Arceans and Iconians. The Yor, Drengin, Korx, Drath and Thalans were all wiped out by the end of the game. Two times during the game, I got the event in which anothor civilization's leader is assanated during a trade metting and that empire recives a lot of crappy ships and declare war on you. Both happened near the late game and I had a lot ships that i designed which had 10 zero point armor attachments, 11 ultimate invonerabilty attachments, 2 mark III Hyperwarp engines and 6 black hole generators. They could destroy most ships in one shot and not recieve much damage in return.
