Galaxy Settings: Equal Opportunity

I like to play all 9 AI opponents and I'm searching for a map setting that allows all civs an equal chance to expand and get off the ground. Currently, the distribution is pretty bad. Every game, at least two civs are killed off before they can even build a military unit because they start right next to other civs, and at least one civ starts off in the corner of the map, two entire sectors away from the nearest star system. That's one third of AI opponents doomed even before the game starts.

I favor large galaxies with abundant everything, scatter star distribution. Is there a recommended number of opponents to play against with such settings?

I would like a similar setup to the one you're describing, except perhaps with slightly fewer opponents. The best way I've come up with for acheiving that is to keep re starting the game (ctrl-n I think) until the homeworlds of everyone are far enough apart, and then tweaking a little here and there by artifically increasing PQ on some worlds with the ctrl-p cheat. Otherwise it'd take a map editor for you to do what you're proposing, and the only one I've heard talk of here on the forums seems to be having its fair share of bugs. I hope they include one in an upcomming version.

D3nt,
You might try this Mod:Readme:
Title: V 1.0 Balanced Custom Planets (BCP)
Date: 3/18/2006
For: Galactic Civilization II v1.0.X

For this mod I simply gave each empire a total of 30 Planet Quality (PQ) points for home systems. I allocated the points in various amounts based on the play style I observed from several games using the Tough AI configuration.

Additionally the "custom empire" homeworld and other inhabitable planet now have a different standard texture and a moon. Furthermore I disabled planet four and five as well.

To install this just place it in the English Directory of your game installation directory. For example: C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Data\English

Don’t forget to make a backup of your original data file.
