I've seen all that too. Also...

They do not work, for one thing. No extra range, no survey ability. If you remove them in the ship designer, no hull space is recovered.

All of this appears only in the ship designer when upgrading those ships, as far as I can tell.

They aren't inactive as such--the core ships often take advantage of the fact that a ship's appearance does not actually have to reflect what is on it. So if you looked in the data files, you'd see that the definition of the colony ship only has one colony pod, etc, and it is only the model definition that is using two copies of the colony model.

I just like the fact that the Altarian freightors look just like the human ones, even though they're a different hull type.. never could figure that one out...
