What is a good civilization name?

Try the random letters method... Just close your eyes and type a random combination of letters and then look at what is there. If it's complete nonsense then just insert a vowel or two between consonants to make a name.

Example:
Afkjdpajh -----> Change to Afikojadpajih or Afkojeeodpajh
Ropow--> Sound ok, so no change needed.
Wqpoeiu---> Waqpoeriu (here I inserted a vowel and a consonant extra)

You get the idea! You can just imagine the possibilities!!!

The only downside is that then you will become lazy in naming even your ships, and just type random stuff on your keyboard

The [something] Hedgemony, Concordium, Union, Federation.

I like to take names from older computer games (My chief custom race is the Shikadi, from the Commander Keen series), from books (I have tweaked with creating a bugger race from Ender's Game), and from Greek and Roman names.

As for the proper name (e.g. Terran Alliance, Drengin Empire), I like to use the following:

- Federaton (neutral/good)
- Dominion (evil)
- Kingdom (neutral)
- Serfdom (neutral/evil)
- Sultanate (neutral)
- Council (neutral/good)

The Tastians for the planet Tasty.

Customonians of the planet Customon, led by the mighty Genericus Rex!

Okay, actually, here's an excellent site for thinking up names. Several of the generators have fields that let you pick a theme for the results, my favorite being somewhere in the "Evil" section (they don't actually all sound evil, it's just the generator's name and official category).
