Diplomacy: How can I make demands?

I want to use my might as a threat and make DEMANDS on an enemy Civ, not ASK to trade (trading usually involves giving 15 techs for 1)

That was one of the big problems I had with GalCIV is that I has a terror star parked next to a star and said surrender and the AI would give some answer like I dont see you as a threat. Well that is what the last 7 star systems said *ZAP*! Just would be nice if AI actually took things like that into consideration.

The way Rome: Total War did demands was that you would "offer" something called "Accept or we will attack". Maybe the developers could look into something like that. An offer option that, while it might allow them to accept the current offer, damages your reputation with the particular AI.

I recall that sometimes(in Rome: Total War) when you did that, the computer player would say something along the lines of saying that you're not a threat to them. Never mind the fact that you'd just wiped out 5 other civs before them.

It does but not so obvious.

If you ask for something and have nothing to offer to trade, the AI wil evaluate your military strength and will reply "You are too weak to make demands of us" if the AI percieves you as weak.

As for it being logical, that is another story.."see this Stellar Convertor hanging over your head..."

Earth had 2 planets and wouldnt trade for less than a 15:1 advantage, or accept any **suggestions** I had before I had to wipe them out

I was allied with the Thalians and I went to war with the Arceans, but the Thalians didnt go to war. I go to the diplomacy screen and I select "attack" but the Arceans are not listed as an option. Relations report says they are still friends with the Arceans. How do I make them honor the alliance?

Todd 77 to make a demand just select what you want from them and then click the trade button without putting anything in yourself.

If you read the little speech at the bottom before you trade it will either say "Give us this or else!!" if you dont like them or "Please help us out by giving us this" if you do like them. It has worked for me lots. Though dont expect a culture just to give you things because they are losing. Often they realise how stupid this is and will just ignore you!!

But requestion them to attack the Arceans is not one of the options and they are allied with me, I want them to go to war with the Arceans

Look at their relations with the Arceans.... if they're neutral or higher, they wont even consider going to war with them.

You can. If you are Neutral or lower and click something from their side.... the thing you ask for is a demand. The civ will respond in kind. If you do it with people higher than neutral it automatically becomes a request.

But I have an alliance with the Thalians, why cant I demand they uphold their alliance with me and go to war with the arceans even though they are friends? Other civs demand I uphold our alliance. But this isnt even an option, for them to attack the Arceans

Sounds to me like they are on to your little scheme and don't want to get involved in your war. Just like America before WWI or WWII, didn't want to get involved in europes wars.

Who declared war first, you or the other race. Alliances are defensive only - attacking another race does not obligate your ally to defend you.

Exactly. One of the most annoying things in some earlier titles was allying with a race, having them attack someone else, and then getting dragged into an aggressive conflict, but that doesn't happen here. If someone attacks you, your allies are obligated to attack them back. If someone attacks your allies, you're asked to go to war with them or break the alliance. If you decide to attack someone, your allies will sit back and watch while the person you attacked kicks your arse back to your homeworld and beyond. But on the bright side, if your ally attacks someone, you don't have to participate, and can continue to sell your products to both sides of the conflict. I've had some cases where I was allied to two races that had started a war before they allied with me, and I ended up selling ships to both sides.

I like the fact that Allies will only automatically come to your aid if you are attacked. It makes far more sense that way. In fact, I think that Allies should re-evaluate their alliance with you if you start a war with a civ they are close or very friendly to.

It's a mutual protection pact..... not a mutual aggression pact.

Evil Civs should have the option of "Mutual Aggression Pact" when they sign an alliance. Or when you declare war on someone, you should have the option "Attack the drengin or I break our alliance" (like in Alpha Centauri. None of my pact brothers wanted to be on my "next target" list)

After all, didn't the Klingons asked the Federation to follow them in an aggressive war, and the alliance then broke? It would be nice to have that option.

On the topic of Alpha Centauri, I remember that at the end, when you finally have nearly beaten a computer, they told you "We surrender!! We will give you all our credit (3) and all our technology if you sign a blood truce!", and if you accepted, it was always : "All right, but you will have to become my Pact Brother", and then, they would be your VASSAL nation (Oh yhea! less micro-management). I then gave back all the base I conquered (except those with really strategic importance), some of my technology, and used them as a front or distraction against other players.

(And when came planetary council meeting, when I asked them "Vote this", they would answer a sweeeeet "as you wish" )

now, THAT would a great surrender option. The race swear they will follow your orders, and you protect them. They give tribute in return. Automatic-Allies, and they do as you ask.

Less micro-management, and more realism. Even, if you loose in a war, "surrendering" would not always mean defeat if you surrender to the right guy. You could use their protection to slowly build up, until you try to "free yourself" of your oppressor! Loosing a war would not be the end.

Except in this game, allies are virtually worthless in attacking a common enemy
