Wimpy AI at Normal Level???

Just wondering what people thought about the AI at "Normal". I've only played as the Terrans so far, but I've been a real bastard to other major and minor races. So far, no one has stepped up to challenge me and I have yet to be attacked by another player. The main competition - the Drengin - seem to love me the more powerful I get and the more minor civilizations I conquer.

I also haven't finished a game yet, so maybe they'll get wise and come after me later on.

I'm sure the higher levels will have me begging for mercy.

I'm playing my first game at 'normal', after finding beginner too easy, and I am finding this to be too easy as well.

I agree that this game is much easier at normal that I expected. But then I went back and played GC1 recently and found that it was a much easier game than I remember as well. I think the biggest thing is learning the interfaces, and some good initial strategies. Even intellegent enemies are beatable now, and I remember have a real tough time with even average enemies in GC1...

At Normal, I'm kicking butt every time.

At Challenging, my butt is getting kicked every time.

Thinking Normal needs a **slight** tweak upwards. Maybe two if the first isn't enough.

Optionally, lower the starting credits available to the Human Player. That seems to be the primary edge I'm getting is the ability to buy three colony ships and multiple factories to jump start the rest of the stuff while I rack up some early techs. Maybe 2000-2500 CR instead of 5000 CR would be a good balancing tweak?

Hopefully you will not find intelligent too easy. If you do, tell us what strategies you are using, and we shall look at adapting the AI to beat them.

Dear authors of GalCiv 2

You have made graet game BUT.....

AI sucks! Enemy ships DO NOT attack my aproching fleet. Enemy fleet is to PASSIVE! The just stand liki idiots and don't move, don't attack. Enemy fleets should raid my planets, make ambushes.
Why AI don't (or not always) escort troop transports!?!??!?!

I play on Tough level..... (inteligent).

PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!

The mention of 'A.I sucks' belongs to the Totalwar or SpaceEmpires forums, not here. The A.I is better in this game than anything else out there. You are never going to get Napoleon A.I routines.

My first which was at Tough difficulty (all the AI are intelligent level) was a good experience. Got 3 other empires to Ally with me and killed off the 2 evil ones that wouldn't

My current game is also at Tough diffuclty. The Drengin are feared by all. They expanded real fast at the start and then 2 AI surrendered to them. Recently a wimpy non-minor AI went down to them and took away half my trade. Couldn't blame my trading partner though. They started in a corner and had no other colonizable planets nearby.

I had slightly better luck with nearby planets at the start but only have six planets currently. The remaining AI empires have equivalent tech levels or slightly better. This is bad since I've been unable to create ships that won't die in combat. If the Drengin managed their troop transports better I would have already lost.

The continual ship losses are a big drain. I don't have the extra capacity to also build the military starbases I'd need to turn things around. Beefing up my diplomacy tech and with this advantage then getting good tech trades worked well. Kept me in the running so far.

Quite a fun game overall! Never had to count so much on other friendly empires.

I believe calling the AI sucks is a little to harsh, especially compared to some other games that have been out for a while. The AI has some good starting points. I have noticed that it does adapt to weapons decently on Int., and it expands throughout the galaxy in the beginning of the game effectively. Could be improved on utilizing planets, but not that bad. Here is a list that I feel the AI could improve.
1. Scouting. In the biggining of the game the Ai scouts planets in a effective way. But later on in the game a smart the AI does noy effectively scout opponents, because the scouting ships are only good in at exploring planets. While a human would fill a cargo hull full of sensors and make it so fast that the Ai would have a hard time attacking it.
2. With the use of cargo sensor ships it is easy to counter troop ships that are trying to invade our planets, I feel that the computer should value his transport ships as much or more than his planets, because they are going into enemy ter. and they don't have any defenses, were a planet you still have to kill the habitants.
3. Computer makes to may uber weak units in the game in the beg.
4.computer doesn't utilize speed enough, which is important on bigger maps. Speed usually lets you avoid the enemy or strike first. it is also important in far away operations, because if you need them back in a hurry tou can do so quickly.
5. Computer should be more aggressive. Try to attack first unless the odds are way to against them then they should avoid and try creat a flleet.
I hope this helps.
P.S. Great Game

another thing I want to add is that the way the computer judges another military power is innacurate, I don't know the best way to improve it, but I feel that the ai should also consider military tech. level.

Did I mention this was an awsome game?

yah there fleet of tiny ships did squat aginst my fleet of medium hull ships because on the first run of the fleet battle i would destroy one of there ships they would then take half the health away from one of mine then id destroy one or two other ships before that last one that got damaged before went down and by that time there ships are too few against my powerful ships that they just get killed. my fleet of 4 medium ships can basically kill a fleet of 7 tiny ships with only one ship lost at most and since my production was amazing i could kill ally ships faster than he could produce even though his military ranking was twice mine. then it was just a manner of placing 1 fleet of ships around the enemy planets so that they couldnt put there puny ships into fleets and i won easily, granted this wasnt on intelligent level (think it was bright or something) but considering the enemy civ owned more than half the planets in the galaxy and it was just me vrs him i feel that he should have done better

I second normal getting a tweek up. I found going from normal to challenging a severe wake-up call.

you cant really compare a game played at "normal" with a game played at challenging unless youd use the same map for both.

the setup of the galaxy is a very important factor for how hard or easy a game is going to be (location of AI empires. habitable planets near your homeworld or near the homeworlds of the AI, resources, anomalies etc).

the AI could be improved more with some tweaks here and there, but imo it does a good job already
