Naming Ships

I haven't played the beta, but I've seen where ship classes can be named. Can individual ships be named? Do they gain any kind of prestige/expertise with battle victories or experience? I look forward to having my version of the Bismarck being sought after by the enemy for its notoriety in tonnage destroyed.

I have a whole list of wonderful names from the British Navy (the have the best ship names ever, like Indefatigable, Exeter, Exelcior, etc) .

Pretty much everything can be named. Ships, planets, enemy ships, enemy planets, fleets. Classes. Starsbases. Rally points.

Individual ships though? It might make sense if Experience makes a big difference (think it was mentioned in the Human Drengin wars thing), let's say you made just a handful of very large ships and there's one surviving with tons of levels, you could upgrade it with newer guns and defenses every once and awhile and it could be very important.

So it might be useful to have a single ship with a unique name in that circumstance.

When you name a ship after designing it any future ships of the same design will be named the same with a different number. For instance if you name your ship Exelcior the first would be Exelcior xxxx and each new ship of that design would be Exelcior with a different number.

I give my ships names as follows: (tiny) Lite fighters, Insects- (small) Heavy fighters, birds- (medium) frigates, reptiles-(large) Cruisers, animals-(huge) battleships, Gods-Worker ships, people. I also prefix the name to keep in alphabetical order according to size

I name individual ships because I tend to get attached to individual units.  I had a game vs. the Dread Lords recently where I had level 27 ships in a fleet.  You can bet they each got names.

I don't do tiny, therefore I have no names for tiny class.

small class - (heavy fighters) Bobcat or Ocelot (with respective Mk 1, Mk 1.5...)
medium class - (corvettes and frigates) Lynx or Puma, not to mention my personal favorite StrayKat!
large class - (cruisers, destroyers) Panther or Leopard
huge class - (battleships, ship-of-line) Tiger or Lion

Never thought about naming personal ships, but I have been adopted by a number of kittys in my life. Thanks for the idea!

I know. Been watching BSG yesterday. It's great fun, even if I've already seen the miniseries and seasons 1 & 2 in english. I wonder if the Yor have hot female models called "Number Six"...

This is one of the small features that makes a big impression in a game.

hmm to namend big ships is ok...they coast a lot and finaly they are mostly unique even in realety but smal fighters or middelclass-ships you will have 50 or more?... it will be make you confuesd when every ship has his own name i think not in the beginning of the game but when you start to finish the ather races per war you will need a lot of ships and than it will be a neasty thing for your self to now or to remember what ship has missels what beams and so on

Ya I know the Bismarck was a German battleship...but there was never a movie entitled "Sink the Hood!"

I expect to get attached to units too...if I have a fleet headed by the dreadnaught Impenetrable, I'd call it the Impenetrable Battle Group, or something. I find that naming the ships and grouping them almost gives the game a...role playing element. I'd hate to just name a ship Exelsior 1002, and another Exelcior 1003 etc. Maybe for smaller ships I wouldn't mind as it would get time consuming and repetitive.

Who makes the movies? Germans? of course not Ami's and Tommy's so they will never namend a movie like that...but perhaps they make also "Vietman-Movies" and that for sure a not honorable to the USA specialy they lost...please don't take this against the peopel there but goverment...dessert storm they win so it's normaly that they make movies

Oh, forget the stupid ship... The man it was named after, that's the stuff!
Just a quick quote:

"Laws are like sausages: It is better not to watch them being made."

If it was going to state a race that the Pryde follows sci-fi wise it would have to be the Kilrathi (-2 spelling) from Wing Commander... just wish I knew more about their ship classes and names could change the names a bit from earth based names to theirs.

Can you set up default .txt files for your opponent ship names? For example, if I have a .txt file of battleship names, can I assign it to the Terran, Drengin, etc.? During the game, it would be neat to battle a Terran led "Enterprise" ship, or whatever.

I have seen txt lists for ship names to be used in various games, e.g., a list of PanHellenic Gods, a list of medieval weapons, a list of star names, etc. I wonder if those lists could be imported. This is probably the same question raised by Citizen TS22.
