[quote]How many of the 9 Cobalts would survive if they had focussed rather than spread? 5? 6? Maybe more?If you go with Alacer's tool for results: * 4 Cobalts survive when spread-firing, with one badly damaged (1/8 health)* 5 Cobalts survive when focus-firing, one badly damaged (1/8 health) and one at 1/3 health.I don't believe it's a convincing argument in favor of spread; as a friend of mine points out, however, it's a convincing argument in favor of shield mitigation doing its job. If the rol

[quote]The way the system is set up, it is not against focus firing though. A single ship can sometimes put an enemy ship to max mitigation. If you outnumber the enemy, he will get bonus mitigation and you might end up doing about the same damage to second as a fleet to him as you would with only a 1 to 1 ratio, because the 2 to 1 pushes his mitigation much higher. You essentially gain very little from having a fleet that is twice as large. In some cases (i.e. teched out advent), or with repair

If you want to talk about other Sci-Fi that deals with folding space IE StarTrek the larger ships are generally faster then the smaller ships because they have two, three or even 4 "warp drives" while the small DD and DDE only have 1 drive... If you want to compare it to the Navy, the American Fast Battleship classes were quicker then some countries CA or CL. Typically it harder to go much faster then 30-36 knots reguardless of the size of t

Norton such IMHO cause more problems then they are worth. Stick with AVG for antivirus Adware for anti adware Spybot Search and destroy for back up In general it is a good idea to always shut down AV software when installing or unistalling software.

Yikes 256mb of ram and a ATI rage chip, 2 year old Gfx drivers and 5 year old sound drivers. Thats like Cira 1998-99 stuff. Updating drivers, increasing the page file to 1gb should help. Buying a $399 computer from Dell would to in the long run.

I would like to get reports like "The Humans and Yor war continues to drag on entering its X month with out either side gaining the upper hand." "The Yor have driven deep into Torian Territory with their latests offensive capturing multiple worlds" ect flavor

The AI have this problem too, at least judging by the graph, after 30-50 turns a few of them will have their Ind and Research plummet for a while before picking back up. I've chalked it down to a cash cruch since I am ussually out of start up funds so to speak at that point if I am not lucky with survay money...

Battletech (not the new mechwarrior books) WingCommander EndRun and Fleet action were very good guilty pleasures to read (the rest were mostly bad) World At War serries more alt-history then Sci-Fi but it is all about Lizard Invaders from outerspace (Harry Turtledove)

I have the fondest memories of the first three computer (PC) games I played. Rail Road Tycoon Sim City Civilization NES Dragon Warrior (Quest) Sega MasterSystem Phantasy Star honorable mention (All platforms) Sim Earth Front Page Sports Football (pro) MOO Clash of Steel (very best PC beer and pretzels war game) Trade Wars 2002 BattleTech Cresent Hawk Revenge (BT:

MOO solved this "problem" (complaint?) by having weapon techs self miniturize over time as you climbed up the tech ladder. It was 100% reasonible to stick with weapon X after you had discovered weapon Y because you could pack more weapon X on board.

If the kid has a Rage 128 pro cira 1999, I highly doubt he has a PCI express or even anything more the APG2x-4x. I also doubt he has the newer voltage APG style. Your best bet IMHO is either to break down and buy a new $500 tower. Or see if Pricewatch still has some NV-4200 cards for $50-80 or one of ATI solutions. Don't spend too much because you don't want to invest too much money into such an old computer, nor will the newer

PC Gamer and Starforce are in league whith each other, thats why it only got an 83%... my theory anyway I am assuming your being ironic or sarcastic. PC-Gamer just did a huge write out talking about the evils of DRM and over zealus copy protection schemes. 83% is right on. Don't get hung up that its not 90%+ 90% or above means instant classic IE Rail Road Tycoon or Sim City level. 80%+ means that its one of the best games in the 4X w

In "real life" (I know ugly words) armies, fleets, air wings rarely fight to the death. Once the screens are killed, it makes sense to retreat the larger capital ships, even if you would "win" the battle. If any change like this is made it should be based on speed of the ships involved, and the AI should be taught the importance of impulse/warp/hyper tech.

Moo3 once patched, patched and patched again with some thrown in DLL by the mod community and you have a fun empire sim. Not really a game in the strictest sense, but enjoyable. I will say that I prefer the MOO (Master Of Orion) 1 type of research tree. You only get ~70% of the tech, thus your forced to trade techs if you are missing some techs (like you have shields I and II but don't get another shield tech till VII). Also as you go up the research ladder, the older tec

Depends on what is considered a "healthy" amount of game time. 4 hours a day seem like a safe upper "max". After that effency would slide down to 50% at 8 hours. I used to play neveron because I was a huge battletech fan. I had a top 100 empire wiped out over night when I was asleep by three power players with out any warning. If you die in WoW, no biggie. If you lose an empire that took
