Regarding #2: There are several programs on the market that allow you to subdivide monitors, and a few of them are free or relatively cheap. I used one called "gridmove" for almost a decade, but recently switched over to 'displayfusion' because it lets me use the normal maximize buttons and hotkeys to resize a window into the containers as well as create and store different layouts and toggle between them.

Not sure if this might help, but I have noticed a pattern in my case. To be clear, i've been seeing the same problem for a disturbingly long time on multiple systems. It's been happening since I installed windows 8.1 and upgraded to fences V2, so I just eventually setup my systems to not turn the displays off unless required. In case my last message was unclear in some way: I already attempted to follow the procedure outlined in your link. I also opened the batch file provided (UpgradeCheck.bat), read it, and then verified that the change it is supposed to make was applied correctly. Disabling the update check is not working on my system. I have confirmed that the correct key was created and is visible in my registry, and have rebooted several times after running that batch file. I still get an update popup every few hours (To the point that I stopped closing it and just dragged it off screen.)
