I seem to have found a solution of a kind. kryo's post reminded me of when X3 wasn't working and for some reason I had to roll back my video card drivers. So I rolled them back to oldest available archived drivers on nvidia's website. And the game worked! Once. Then it was back to not working for some reason in the exact same way. So I reinstalled the old drivers. And it worked again. So it seems that the game will work. And when I can't start it, which will be often,

I purchased the game a few days ago from steam and it wouldn't run at all. No notice or anything. I uninstalled it. Downloaded the game from Stardock directly. Game still doesn't run. No "has stopped working" notice. I've tried updating my graphics drivers, using a activation file overwrite, running it in administrator mode; Nothing has worked thus far.
