Thanks for the quick reply Sean. Overall the problem seems to have been resolved following installation of 1.4.0.4-j287, however I noticed it occur this morning after waking the laptop from hibernation. It was associated with the appearance of the notifications icon (which was not present at the time of hibernation) and remained until I manually opened a new window (a browser in this case). From my point of view then, the 1.4 tweak is a suitable workaround for the issue as the problem is
