I had this issue as well, using Start8 1.5 and Windows 8.1 x64. I don't use menus to shut down. I have assigned shut down to my power button. By the way, when the desktop freezes after logon with a blank screen, press the windows key a few times to get it going. Uninstalling Start8 fixes the issue. I am now using Classic Shell (free) and there is no problem. Also Classic Shell has a Windows 7 Aero style
