Thanks for the quick reply - the product I was looking at was OD rather than Fences (it's shown as an option on the Fences purchase page). If OD has five activations I'll definitely go for that as a $19 renewal rather than an outright purchase of a new Fences licence.

The purchase page for Fences says the number of active installs for Object Desktop is 5 - is this correct if I renew a previous licence as well? Thanks! - Mike

Is there an upgrade path from Start10 purchased on Steam, and if so does it retain the 5 installations? Pretty much all my colleagues at work are looking for a Windows11 start menu replacement but being techies with multiple PC/VMs none of them would buy a single-install licence Mike

The product page for Fences on Steam states "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Stardock SAS 5 concurrent machine activation limit" - is this correct ? Mike
What makes you believe it was Start10 as the cause?
Booted up, got a black screen. Checked task manager and explorer wasn't running. Tried to run explorer.exe, it started briefly then crashed. Stopped Start10 in the process list, started explorer again and it worked. Rebooted, needed the same sequence to get a desktop. Uninstalled Start10 and not had a problem since. Plus this in the event log po

Just had a case where the demo for Start 10 expired when I was on vacation. When the PC started it went to a black screen with no desktop, no message, no indication of the reason for the problem. Trying to start Explorer.exe caused the desktop to appear briefly then crash agan. To get things back I had to run Task Manager, kill the Start 10 process then start Explorer.exe to get the desktop back. At that point I could uninstall Start 10 and the machine worked perfectly from that point. <
A desktop is not a window. It is not free-floating and cannot do so. You can 'simulate' all you like... but the desktop icons will not be desktop icons if you move them to a window of whatever type you want to call it. They exist on the desktop level...that's why they are called 'desktop icons'. It's not semantics...it's what they are.<
Docks exist to provide access to icon shortcuts above existing open windows. Those icons are not desktop icons....they are at desktop level by definition....and a desktop is always underneath windows...[e digicons];)[/e]
True, but let's be realistic, it's really just semantics - the desktop itself is still a window and has been since windows 1 was released back in '85.
Yes.....that's called a 'dock' ..... but a dock isn't a fence.....[e digicons];)[/e]
Technically it's only a dock if it's dockable - but I'm just looking at a technical solution to a problem.

If you know what the fence is then you should know what icons are contained in the fence. Create the on-top window and replicate the contents of the fence in the window.

If you can link a hotkey to a fence then that hotkey could open a window as "always on top" that contains the contents of the fence.

Add an option to stop rolled up fences unrolling when you mouseover the title unless you click on the title.

I think this was mentioned in a post sometime last year but that's gone very quiet. Is it going to be possible at some point to disable the automatic rolldown of fences with the mouse goes over the title bar? I'd much rather have to double-click the title than have random fences opening when I'm just moving the mouse around the screen. Mike
