I think the monsters are fine. It presents a challenge, it would be boring without the constant threat of annihilation :) I suppose the devs could put an option in that would limit the spawns until a certain turn? I'd also like to point out that the mobs in some cases do you dirty work for you. Been in a few games where my AI opponents are wiped off the map by wandering monsters :)
Two comps at home, one XP and one Win7 64bit. Installed the beta on both. FE runs very poorly on my XP machine. So I play it on the Win7 machine, it does really well on that machine.
