In my experience, in order to play F2P games, you must be very wealthy to be on a competitive level, that goes for online games though. I havent seen a F2P single player game as of yet (ie. found and played it, I am sure there are F2P single player games). But, for a F2P to be compelling it must be extremly good to begin with, and the "fluff" stuff you can buy should not be superextraextremly good or gamebreaking or overpowered or anything like that.
